Yes, we are Black Bin for household. Blue bin for recycling (card, glass, tin etc). Brown for garden which you have to pay a fee for.    (Black one week, others the next week.... and so on.)

I have seen on the web, that if all Councils synchronise, then there will also be a red one for glass.

I have just found a bit of a solution re the temporary porch position of the Black Bin. I have a piece of board which I can lay against the door threshold. It does help me a bit to get the bin in and out of the porch, up and over the threshold.

(They have not given me a Blue Bin yet. Neighbour thinks that is, because she has always had one, they think I already have one!)

I have also just sent a mail to the Senior Customer Information Officer at the Council. He was very kind when the Council Trees subsided my bungalow. Maybe he will be able to help and confirm if there are any smaller bins at all to be had.

Going back to the gate, if you are of an age try finding out if Age UK still have a subsidised handyman scheme. It's an 0800 number.

Also I seem to remember one for people with disabilities.
But these schemes come and go

It's also a factor here that half the small bungalows are built with steep access so it's a problem.
I know the green waste people collect and return my neighbours bin which general waste don't but that may be because they regularly change teams but green waste stays the same so they know she can't manage.

I can rise and shine - just not at the same time!

Giving the bin men a Xmas tip may solve this problem. They may then be agreeable to lifting one black bag from your doorstep.

No way our Binmen will help, unless they are officially ordered to. They have strict instructions.

I looked at Age UK for our town, no contractors at all for Fencing and Garden Maintenance. Only one for Gas, even.

I have about six Contracting companies for Fencing, nearby. But the stressful problem for me is the process, not so much the cost.

So I sent the details to one really good company I know, last Sunday, hoping they can fit me in between their jobs. But not had a reply so far. Tried to phone yesterday and it just went to Voicemail.

So I now have the problem that if I approach a 2nd company, now, then it is embarrassing if I do then hear from the first good one. I don't know how long to wait for the first to respond.

And then the process will start again with a second one... contact them, wait.......

I have a fear of ringing multiple companies. I tend to prefer one by one. Does anybody have any feedback on this issue? Blitz several companies? Or go one-by-one.

I suspect we also have problems getting contractors, because many new houses are being built round here.

I honestly cannot believe how big this 240 litre bins is. (My friend in Belgium is full of sympathy. They only have 80 litre size bins and regular collections.)

(Thought about moving into an over-50 flat once. But cannot sell easily now, after a recent Subsidence claim. Council Trees. The Council is such a burden on my life!!)

  • In my council, I have seen people with smaller wheelie bins which apparently was purchased online from Amazon and the binmen had no issues collecting rubbish.

Wonder if this is an option for you?

It is so very VERY strict here. We are also in the top 5 Councils, that issued the most fines for Wheelie Bin misdemeanours.

We have been given an 8-page booklet: "no different arrangements permitted for individual households". No mention of any different size bins.

When I asked the guy who dumped this 240 litre one on me if they have smaller bins.. he shouted NO!

I have e-mailed the Senior Customer Advisor at the Council by e-mail, to ask if he can help in discussions with Veolia re the size issue. Not sure if he will reply.

I just telephoned the company that makes the bins. They said each pick-up lorry is different. Not every lorry can pick up small bins.

Quite honestly, the whole affair makes me feel quite sick!

OP has the option of talking to the council about zero-cost options to overcome their difficulties with a 240l bin, given their health condition(s) but.....

Here the general waste bin is the smaller size to encourage people to recycle, the recycle bin is the larger size. That said even the small one only goes out about every six weeks.

Going forward, I don't think your bin in the porch will work.

Realistically, it's going to be heavier with stuff in it than it is now while empty and after it's been dragged back and forwards across your green, 'twill be filthy at the bottom, possibly soaking wet  and you won't want it in your porch - going off your immaculately clean front door and step (I'm impressed!).

Would this help in the interim? - Wheelie bin lid strap lock - approx. £25 from Amazon - that should stop the bin- tippers- for -fun brigade and the arsonists etc and a padlock and chain combo - approx £5 from Amazon - to secure the bin to a drainpipe/post/big burly chap and stop it being nicked?

    Good luck.

OP, have you contacted your local councillor. Or local paper? They often like the "Council treats people badly" type of story, but it depends what kind of local paper it is.
