Presumably the op had mobile data whilst they were a plusnet customer, so their ee signal was OK then?

We have Samsung handsets and recently switched to EE from Plusnet and had no issues even on a handset as old as the Galaxy S6.

Original A8 and the updated A8 which are fairly old now.  No problems switching except EE overcharging.
