@photome is it possible to reset if the fobs are completely non responsive?
I haven’t tried it on a VW but have done it a few times on a Toyota

@darkcloudi I’ve tried resetting the keys it doesn’t fix the problem. I went through the manual and turned off the alarms internal sensor hoping that would stop the alarm going off when I open the door but it doesn’t make any difference.

It helps if you had the cover in place, new RAC POLICY, claim in a week or two.
    Might be a bit unethical.

The AA have a key service. Never used so don’t know the cost.

@Bigwheels1111 I’ve always had breakdown cover but wasn’t aware it may cover keys, thanks for the info ;-)

Seems strange the VW garage want a diagnostic fee + key replacement cost?

Why dont they just charge a key replacement cost?

When I brought an Audi with just 1 key the Audi dealership just quoted a new key cost and even waived the cost to programme it to the car.
that might be because they can  re syncronise the keys and  the car  as it might be that  if  one or more o the fobs was  electrically  dead  for a substantial period of time it;s lost sync ...

the replacement  charge  might be required if the  fobs are  actually unserviceable / damaged  when properly  assessed

'waived  the fee to programme'   weith e one key  car, they know  that  asa dealership they  really ought to be supplying  two keys  and should have swallowed the cost of  a second key and programming , but as you asked  for the second key and  possibly baulked at  the  cost of  key and programming they 'did you a favour'   to  make usre the sale went through...   if  you haven;t asked aobut a second key   they'd  have said nothing  saved themselves the cost

@EnPointe thanks  I bought the car brand new in 2016 it came with 2 key fobs which have lasted 3 1/2 years each. Now neither are working remotely. I’m not prepared to  buy a new fob every 3 1/2 years. It’s going to be a bad advert for VW every time the car is unlocked and the alarm goes off. I won’t buy VW again.

@EnPointe I bought the car at the end of 2016 so it’s just over 7 years for the lifespan of 2 key fobs which isn’t good

Not trying to be a critic but maybe you should have tried to replace one of the batteries whilst the other one still worked.
