Next thing I would look for then is whether there are any broken connections inside or dry joints on the board.

You have been very unfortunate to have two fobs fail, but appreciate that doesn't help.
  • Have you tried this (grabbed from here: https://www.gunthervw.com/how-to-program-vw-key-fob/) :

I remember a few years ago I had to do something similar where I changed the fob battery on my VW Golf 2014 and all of a sudden my fob stopped working and the alarm went off each time trying to open the door until I started the ignition, followed these or similar instructions and fob went back to normal.

How to Reset VW Key Fob With One Key?

If either the remote battery or your car’s battery goes flat, your key fob’s remote lock/unlock function may stop working. It’s easy to reprogram a VW key fob in this case. Unlike our previous section, this process will work with only one VW key fob and typically works with models up to the 2016 model year.

The first step is to manually unlock your VW vehicle using the master key and step inside.

Next, insert the physical key into the ignition, and turn the key to position two (the final position before the engine-starting position)

While seated, lock your VW vehicle using the lock/unlock switch on the inside of your door.

Press and hold the lock button with your VW Key fob still in the ignition.

When a red light begins to blink on your VW key fob, the process is complete and should restore your remote VW key fob functions.

Repeat this reprogramming process as many times as necessary.

    ill have a go @darkcloudi
  • I understand DIY changing batteries on a key fob, can be tricky. Get it wrong and the car will not respond to the signal from the fob. I am suggesting the fob could be fine and the car could fine, but one doesn't recognise the other.
I have had my batteries changed at Timpson the high street key cutters, wonder if they ever got it wrong, would they know the process to re-marry the fob to the car? Give them try? Anyone seen a YouTube on this?

Yes, as I said in my earlier post, had same issue where the fob became unresponsive (had to use key to unlock), used the reset method and fob worked.
  • It’s a shame you do not have RAC key cover, you could claim in a week or two.
