Schengen/EU entry and 10 year passport rules

The Ryanair "customer service agent" is completely and utterly wrong.jj42 said:Hey everyone, just wanted to give you a bit of an update. Despite the EU entry rules being quite clear, I spoke with Ryanair "customer service" agents (I am flying into the EU with Ryanair) and they informed me that their rules on the expiry date are different:
"For the UK citizens on international flights the rules are as follows: the passport should be valid for at least 3 months + period of stay, a passport cannot be used if its validity exceeds 10 years."
Implying that the expiry date needs to be within the 10 years too. When challenged on the divergence from EU entry rules, the response was:
"If you travel with Ryanair you should follow Ryanair 's rules. Travel rules by car, train , bus are different from by aircraft."
Given that and not wanting to be refused entry at the gate, and the fact that I'm travelling in a month, I am renewing my passport urgently as I don't want to ruin a family holiday for the sake of a hundred quid or so.
It's very disappointing, but I'd rather be disappointed now than when travelling.

There are still quite a few red passports which include months carried over. This stopped in 2018 so mine (issued in Jan 2019) is valid for exactly 10 years.NoodleDoodleMan said:"a passport cannot be used if its validity exceeds 10 years."This doesn't make sense in respect of a British citizen - UK standard issue passports have a 10 year lifespan."Implying that the expiry date needs to be within the 10 years too."Which is the current position, is it not ?0 -
Ryan air misinterpreted the rules when they first changed and were required to change thier rules.
It seems they are still misinterpreting them.1 -
Previous threads on this board amply demonstrate that if you keep asking enough people about the rules, you'll eventually get a wrong answer....jj42 said:Hey everyone, just wanted to give you a bit of an update. I'll renew it early next year to avoid any issues.0 -
You won't be able to leave the UK (to travel to a Schengen country) on it after April 21st 2025.Neil49 said:

I have just been denied boarding today for a ferry to the Netherlands. My passport issued 10 March 2015 and expiry 10 June 2025.
I was advised that since Brexit the EU/Shengen area no longer recognise additional months that were previously added to your expiry date for renewals pre 2018.0 -
That latter sentence isn't really true, as explained upthread, but your passport entitles you to enter the EU before 10 March (ten years from issue), as long as you also leave the EU by that same date (coincidentally, three months before expiry). Were you asked when you were planning to return?cumbrianmale said:I have just been denied boarding today for a ferry to the Netherlands. My passport issued 10 March 2015 and expiry 10 June 2025.

....in which case you shouldn't have been denied passage, unless the ferry company has any more onerous stipulations above and beyond the actual legal requirements. Worth a complaint and refund (at least)!cumbrianmale said:
