I need to deposit cash in bank.  All area branches do not exist any more.  There is one main branch in town.  I cannot get to town until the afternoon.  It closes at 3pm!!  How on earth can people bank any more.  Yes I do have digital but that’s not the point.  I often still need to do this. It makes me so angry 😡.

Have you tried the Post Office?  https://www.postoffice.co.uk/everydaybanking

  • Is there an ATM outside the branch?  You can usually deposit cash at a bank's "own" ATM.

If you do it often how have you solved for it before?

It's in part why increasingly people don't accept cash if they can avoid it, its a risk holding/handling it, its time consuming/costly and inconvenient.

The last time I had to go to a branch was years ago when the battery failed in my HSBC security token and they hadn't sent a replacement automatically. Before that would have been to deposit a cheque but that can now be done by App too. It's inevitable that as the majority rarely attend a branch that branches cease to be economical to run. They're no different to shop branches, if one isn't profitable then it gets closed down.

Halifax branches used to offer it but the newer cash machines they use dont have this facility, you also found come the end of the weekend the envelopes had all run out. Well, in my experience anyway.

I guess it could well depend on the bank.  I'm with Santander, and at the branch in town you can pay in cash or cheques.  You put them in loose - if it's a cheque it scans it, tells you what it thinks the amount is, then asks you to confirm if it's the right amount.  With cash you can feed in a wad of notes, it'll count the money and again, ask you to confirm if that's the right amount.  Always struck me as pretty clever :)

You can do it at a post office with lots of banks, they are often counters inside other shops and tend to be open when a bank wouldn't be.

Where are you getting cash from that can't be paid electronically>

I would go back to first principles and ask why I have so much cash and is there some way to minimise or eliminate the amount I need to deal with.

In their post from last year, they were trying to easily deposit coins saved up over a period of time, so possibly not a regular problem.
