the numismatic value of these coins is likely to be higher than their face value; whilst you can indeed exchange it at face value if you want, you should be able to get more for it by flogging it on eBay.

Most banks won't change money for non-customers - not just £5 coins but anything. You might find a sympathetic one but don't bank on it.

To be of value to a collector it needs to be in pristine condition.
  • Cheers guys

Had a look on Ebay to see if that was a possibility and some of them are on there for like £20, but didn't see any bids or anything, plus mine isn't in pristine nick, it's not even shiny anymore! To be honest would be happy with just getting my fiver back!

Will have to see if anyone at Lloyds TSB or RBS lets me pay one into my account. If anyone has any further info please post! x
  • Hi All

Forgot to go to the bank, but managed to spend the coin in my local Asda store. I was there a while and the girl at the checkout had to check with 3 supervisors but they took it. I told a little white lie and told them I'd been given it by a cashier in a bank branch that day, so saying that seemed to add a little weight to them accepting it in terms of the legality of the coin. So if you have any I suggest Asda! I think it does all depend on who you get to be honest though, and also your attitude. Think if I'd have demanded they take it from me it might have been a different story. . . .

    Hi,

Not sure if this is right forum to post but I need free advice:-

I have 2 £5.00 coins which I had couple of years now. Is it possible to convert it to money?

    Thanks
