Word of warning, apparently some shops (not sure which - friend did not say) are not taking the old £20.00 notes, banks are happy to exchange these.

I work in a bank and if anyone tries this on you tell them off! The 'old' (ie the ones before the new monopoly-looking ones) £20 notes are still current legal tender, they haven't even announced an end date for them yet!

HSBC accept the £5 coins, but usually only from their own customers, paid into an account (due to forgeries etc).

I think the definition of "legal tender" has been widely misunderstood in this thread.

I don't believe any £5 coins are legal tender, this refers to coinage/notes that can be used to settle a legal debt. Paying your groceries is not a debt unless the retailer chooses to let you pay later (as an example).

Banks can refuse any deposit if they so wish, but there is no good reason to do so. The new 20 Euro note is seen infrequently at present.

Basically, I wouldn't use unusual currency in shops (it's probably worth more than face value anyway) and certain banks seem to be being diffficult with regards to £20 notes (although they still happily dispense old £20 notes, go figure)

I know this is an old thread but...................

just came across some £5 coins and wondered has anyone put them into bank accounts recently. checked the Royal MInte website and says they are worth £5 lol but in reality how easy are they going to be to put into an account?

Also came across some that were worth 25p

  • I have just moved my Mum into a Care Home and whilst sorting out her 'stuff' found a bag full of coins, mainly the £5.00 commemorative ones...e.g. in memory of Diana, Princess of Wales which i believe was minted in 1999....So, my question is this...can I use them in any way or are they just for show??

So long as they're official ones, you can spend them or exchange them for other money, although some places may be reluctant to take them as they're so uncommon (and they certainly don't have to.)

I've got a few of these, including the Silver Jubilee one issued to all school children in 1977.
