For those that believe ASHP and EV's are increasing demand

Look at this downward trend in total demand

ASHPs and EVs are increasing demand because there are more of them coming into use all the time. In suggesting otherwise I wonder if you are making a joke or trying to make a serious point?
UK electricity consumption has been falling for years for various reasons, including particularly energy efficient lighting, and this trend seems unlikely to continue.4 -
our energy is dropping as weve offshored manufacturing to china and india etc
like our boast that weve dropped our emmisions
yes because we dont make anything anymore
making things in china and india with coal power is not "green"
its like buying a EV and think it is zero emmsions when were still using 35% gas over the year
right now at max demand were using 60% gas

The grid has over 100% excess capacity at night. Much car and home battery charging makes good use of that. Heat pumps can also do, at least, water heating during those times when the lower COP is offset by lower electricity prices.
Better utilisation of the grid ultimately helps to reduce electricity costs. Once V2G/H becomes common on cars, that will be another means to make better use of cheaper, greener, renewable electricity.

Taken from O/P linked article " Demand for electricity is expected to double as the UK aims to cut emissions to net zero by 2050 because the plan relies heavily on replacing fossil fuel transport and heating with electric alternatives"1

But double at the right time overnight where there is plenty of energy availableand then utilising VTG vehicle to grid technology to store and then discharge at peak times.
Of course those that benefit first are those with money for EV's, battery storage, solar and ASHP but they are the Pioneer's here.
As long as we get the remaining 48% of people on smart meters the grid can be nicely balanced and everyone can play their part as we all join the electric party train.
Those that cannot see it, don't want to see it.2 -

EV's of course in the majority will be on charge overnight.
Add to that home batteries becoming more common with solar installs and those who already have solar adding batteries.

The National Grid are confident that they can cope with the transition to EVs.

the grid control know the demand they have big screens with big numbers on it telling them
theyve had this since weve had a grid in 1938

how does a smart meter help with load balancing ?
Because they'll get a more granular picture of demand and will be able to make adjustments at sub-station level to better utilise resources.
