All film content on Sky HD is output at 1080p carried in a 1080i stream, which is easily extractable to the original. It's not a problem like it is in the US, because putting 25fps into a 50hz carrier is simple (compared to 24 into 60). Basically you end up with half the picture output one frame, the second half the next, the TV stitches them together, and you end up with exactly the same thing as if it was 1080p25 all along.

Of course, 1080 lines on a 42" is borderline pointless, the set is simply too small to make that worthwhile. To actually get any benefit you need to sit 6-7 feet away, and that's assuming you have 20/20 vision. At 9-10 feet away (the national average), you might as well use a 720p set, as the extra pixels are not possible to discern.

Personally I think 1080p is a waste of time on anything under 50" - even on my 55" 1080p I'm not sure it's worth it. A study done a while back showed resolution was only the third most important factor for image quality, behind colour accuracy and contrast.

    Thank you for that clarification.
  • interesting to see if ayone gets one regardless of the picture quality!

Part of the Furniture 1,000 Posts Name Dropper
It is a True HD, just not Full 1080i, then theres "Full 1080p" which is even higher spec. This refers to the DISPLAYED picture, not the input it will take

Oh - the great picture quality debate again!! Take ANYONES opinion with a pinch of salt, also, don't always go off the setup in the shop. They don't always set them up correctly! I have a Tosh, and spent £1200 on it a couple of years ago WITHOUT checking it out in store - assuming a Tosh would be fine, esp. with the spec on internet...anyway...I was VERY upset with the picture quality etc. for about 4 months and nearly sold it to get a plasma- until I learnt how to set it up properly - now it is fine. The HD quality is FABULOUS - in my opinion! ha ha ha! £500 for this screen is a GREAT price. The bigger the screen with SD, the crappier the picture will look - it's like enlarging a picture - it gets blockier. Also depends on the BIT rate that the video is encoded at. For example, BBC HD is sometmes poorer quality than other times. Suppose the BEST way to tell is get your !!! down to a store and check out the picture using the same source - not many places will let you do this - too busy! If you are not sure about it - read up on internet and check it out in store too. I would not buy blind again!

Any one think that the stores make sure that they display the TVs they are going to make most profit on with the best picture? Ive been looking over the last week and am sure they do!! maybe I am just being cynical.
