Yes he definitely died 😒 Iv searched the register for England not just a town or city there’s no one of the age or name like I said they have the telephone record when his wife rang but there’s nothing been registered
You contacted Sheffield Register Office in 2023 - and they disclosed to you that someone else (the brother's wife) had called them, 3 years ago, on the 20th December 2019 to tell them that her husband had died - but no formal record was created?
I know death certificates are publicly accessible - but do register offices really disclose who has phoned them? And what they phoned about? 3 years later?
We paid twice on the national register they couldn’t find anything they said to ring Sheffield where he died after 40 mins on the phone they said they could find the call from his wife on 20th December but can’t find the death being registered? We rang last week not 2023

I thought everything with regard to mother's estate was finalised months ago? wasn't her son's death certificate required then?

This new thread certainly clarifies why the solictors are unwilling to release 50% of the proceeds from the house sale referred to in the other thread. The brother with the missing death certificate is a potential beneficiary of his mother's estate - and they do not have a document to show that he died before the mother. So of course they cannot release his potential share to his sister.
I know that ? the original post was about them holding all the money for no reason probably in a client account in the completed accounts there is no mention of interest that’s what my post was all about my wife went to see solicitor who gave her the accounts then said they would release the money in 3 working days then after they said they now wanted to see a death certificate so they only realised half even though the accounts say different

For the bank to release money from the BiL's accounts, they would have needed a death certificate or probate. A long shot I know, but it might be worth contacting the banks to ask if they have records as to whether they saw a death certificate and if so have they kept a copy.

It would have been his wife who would have sorted all that 4 years ago she died the year after I think coroner’s office may be my next call

Well they are going to need to hold these funds for quite a while longer without evidence that the other beneficiary predeceased the mother. You might not want to post information here - but what I'd recommend is going on a genealogy / family history discussion forum. Say you're trying to find the death certificate for your brother-in-law - you don't need to explain why. Just give all the name, date, location details you have. There are people on those forums who are great at tracking stuff down.

We’re going to ring the coroners office Monday first thanks anyway 👍
  • Can you get his national insurance number and possibly bank account details from his last employer? You may be able to track something down through the benefits or banking systems.
The hospital and/or his former GP are required by law to keep records for a number of years so a solicitor may need to request the release of the relevant records; there must be some record of the death even if not a death certificate.
Regarding the name, as others have suggested think laterally - look for names that could be a typo or “sounds like” eg John, Johns etc?

Most deaths are not reported to the coroner - and you could try the suggestion above tonight. People on those forums are expert at tracking down death certificates.

GP will have sent records to the central NHS register at some point - even if they do have them (if no-one has put the deceased code on them) the GP won;t have the death cert if they died in hospital.

As a GP I did MCCDs and had the details of what I put etc on the counterfoil of the book, we kept the counterfoils and the books under lock and key - however the MCCD is not the death cert so wouldn't be any help. Similarly the hospital may have the details on the counterfoil but that is not the official cert
