And what they phoned about? 3 years later?0

https://forums.moneysavingexpert.com/discussion/6495809/solicitor-holding-on-to-money#latestThis new thread certainly clarifies why the solictors are unwilling to release 50% of the proceeds from the house sale referred to in the other thread. The brother with the missing death certificate is a potential beneficiary of his mother's estate - and they do not have a document to show that he died before the mother. So of course they cannot release his potential share to his sister.0 -
For the bank to release money from the BiL's accounts, they would have needed a death certificate or probate. A long shot I know, but it might be worth contacting the banks to ask if they have records as to whether they saw a death certificate and if so have they kept a copy.Polar Pigs live in pigloos.....0

You might not want to post information here - but what I'd recommend is going on a genealogy / family history discussion forum. Say you're trying to find the death certificate for your brother-in-law - you don't need to explain why. Just give all the name, date, location details you have. There are people on those forums who are great at tracking stuff down.1

Can you get his national insurance number and possibly bank account details from his last employer? You may be able to track something down through the benefits or banking systems. The hospital and/or his former GP are required by law to keep records for a number of years so a solicitor may need to request the release of the relevant records; there must be some record of the death even if not a death certificate.Regarding the name, as others have suggested think laterally - look for names that could be a typo or “sounds like” eg John, Johns etc?0

Most deaths are not reported to the coroner - and you could try the suggestion above tonight. People on those forums are expert at tracking down death certificates.

As a GP I did MCCDs and had the details of what I put etc on the counterfoil of the book, we kept the counterfoils and the books under lock and key - however the MCCD is not the death cert so wouldn't be any help. Similarly the hospital may have the details on the counterfoil but that is not the official cert0
