If only it had been £1500. It was £2900. ☹️And I had/have savings....I had packed my books with all passwords in to access savings accounts. We got the bill 3 hours before we got keys to the new house with half our contents already loaded on to vans and we had no time to be finding books with passwords and raiding savings accounts. So even with a buffer I was caught out. We thought it had all been sorted (if you remember how relieved I was when they promised it would be taken off) so I didn't give it a second thought to pack books with passwords in. We managed to scrape together £1900 extra and then had to borrow the £1k from DP M&D or we would have had the whole chain come crashing down around our ears at that point. Thinking back I can't actually believe how stressful this whole thing has been.
ohhh sorry I didn't realise it was as bad as that, that is a huge amount, yes explain everything, they have really taken the michael. How awful - please let me know what you call your new diary, I love following you. Sorry again.

Just read through this you have indeed been a moving organisation whizz!
All that stress with the fees etc !!

Take your time to settle in the new home - congrats for moving in !

sonetikes YNAB will give an extra month or even 6 month free trial  might be worth asking ?

On the YNAB categories amounts you can tick boxes of a category group or even odd categories and to the right on the desktop version it adds up all the targets, spends etc
if you do this in a future month where nothing has been spent or allocated you can see what’s needed

personally I don’t move money to future months but have a ready to allocate on the 1st category where extra cash goes (when I have it ) and then on the 1st I then release that money to RTA to assign
the YNAB support are great if you send them screenshots of your issues /queries

What was in the boxes you put in storage ? Breakables ? As I wasn’t clear why you were paying movers (as I always do) and also paying for storage
    DON'T BUY STUFF (from Frugalwoods)
No seriously, just don’t buy things. 99% of our success with our savings rate is attributed to the fact that we don’t buy things... You can and should take advantage of discounts.... But at the end of the day, the only way to truly save money is to not buy stuff.    Money doesn’t walk out of your wallet on its own accord.

  • I've emptied out my last savings pot I had easy access to. I purposely held this one back as I need to get DS bits for school. He starts on Wednesday and I haven't got him the PE kit or lab coat he needs yet. I don't think I have enough money for it all really. I bailed out DP account from the red this morning with that last pot (he bought us food until Monday with the last of his money and went slightly into the OD so he's out of that now) and I have around £60 left. I had money in my surveys account this morning too so I transferred that out and used it to pay for 1 month on the YNAB. DP & I were hesitant to do that and don't really like feeling held to ransom, all my figures were in there though and I couldn't access it. But it didn't come out of the money we have from savings anyway so I see that as a neutral really.

Anyway I am going to pop to the uniform shop and see if they have the items available for DS as online it is showing as 2 week delivery. If I have to order, it is what it is really. He has the main uniform and I can get him other bits to 'do for now' and it will be okay. My sister said they're not super strict so not to worry too much.

@LadyWithAPlan I had movers break some very sentimental and expensive antiques on my move before this one, I think I kind of had major anxiety about it happening again. The storage is only £30 for two weeks (thereabouts) so I felt it was worth paying for to keep the items safe (3 car loads of delicates went in there so quite a bit) and my sanity over it in tact  . It has also cleared a lot of space in the house and we are bringing bits over a little at a time. All of DP office items went in there (not valuable but we had lots of space to use so filled it with stuff we didn't need immediately)  so we could use his office space for unpacking items and finding homes for everything. Had this total balls up not happened with the mortgage company we would be in a great position for money all things considered, but right now I am thinking, I wish I had that money back and we hadn't used the storage. C'est la vie. I know it will all come right eventually.

My job for today (once I have sorted the uniform) is to sit with the YNAB and reconcile AGAIN and see just what we can cut back on AGAIN, with what we have coming in over the next month. I have to factor in a trip to the West Midlands for DP as he has an interview next Wednesday.

Once we get the money back, I need to repay -
    M&D- £1,000,
    Birthday & Christmas fund - £166,
    Bonus money - £205.

I should be left with around £1500 (just over).

I want to top the EF up immediately to £3k (so £750 over to that), we might need this if DP changes jobs and there is a tight month where we're waiting on wages. I will be left with £750, I will top up some of the pots that are crying out for money and the rest may need to be used for this month's budget (I've got some final bills through from old house too).

If I don't need it and can figure a way out to get through the month that will also go to savings but that is doubtful. And I guess any uniform I haven't already purchased will have to be bought too from that.

DP is upstairs butchering our bed frame. It is old and knackered after we had to cut it down to size to fit in an awkward shape in the last house, and too big for the space we want it to fit in. We planned to get rid of it anyway but this has helped spur things on when there is no room. He is making a makeshift wardrobe using the chipboard off the frame, we will keep the drawers in tact from under the bed and use those to store clothes for now too. We had a rail already from the last house when we had to make makeshift wardrobes then too. We will buy a cheap divan base when we can and a nice headboard eventually.

I have washing everywhere and no home for it just yet so I need to hoover out the airing cupboard in the bathroom and make use of that for towels and bedding. Then put all the clothes into any wardrobe spaces I can find. Right going to see if I can fix the budget which has had money in and out and in and out like it's being washed because of the ruddy mess up with bills. I need to make sure I categorize and reconcile it very carefully or we will be loads under or over otherwise which won't help me.

Congratulations on being in and surviving even though it was tough.  I guess a good way to look at it is that if you hadn't have been so on top of saving for the actual fees (rather than the extra made up wrong amounts) things could have gone a lot worse.  Would emptying the storage area sooner rather than the date you planned, get the extra money back earlier?  Could help to tide you over until the big money is returned.

With DS lab coat and PE Kit, is it worth asking on the FB site if anyone has any spares / hand me downs to keep him going until the money is there.  Some bits may be worth not ordering if can get second hand items that are ok.

  • The shortest you can take the lockers on for is two weeks. We literally paid for it and handed notice period in at the same time. It's been useful not to have it all here to be honest we still have around 15 medium sized boxes and many paintings/ mirrors down there.
We will get a refund though! We paid for a month and they will refund two weeks.
The mortgage company rang us the refund has been through their processing and we should get it next week so we will be okay if it comes quickly.

I've been to the uniform shop and spent £38 there. They had only one size left and it just happened to be his...yay for him being tall and skinny rather than short and broad. I scoured FB MP for months since knowing he's going and set and alert up and nothing ever came up for that school (it's pretty small).

I'm going to start afresh on the budget for tomorrow. I will set up a new one in YNAB and have the accounts all reconciled correctly from the off. I haven't the time or patience to sit and go through all the money passing through the accounts over the last month. & I can't figure out where I've gone wrong. I think I might take out certain accounts from the new one too make it easier for me to manage.

We've food in for the weekend and a meal plan. The freezer is pretty much empty but I will rectify that next week. The kids understand we're a little cash poor at the moment and are being good about it. DD said she doesn't want a new school bag, DS has said he isn't bothered about logo'd PE shorts or having a hair cut. I feel really bad though and feel like this is my fault we've not got enough.... however I have today unpacked the book with passwords so I can access my savings accounts that aren't linked to my current account. So we can restore the budget as it should have been. I can then give the kids hair cuts and new bags! I will hold off on taking from there though until next week as we should have that refund back!

Well done on the refund processing! You have made me realise how much of extra cash for safety I need when buying including a 'mortgage company cant read  its own contract' money!!

I think it is great  that the kids are aware  and being supportive of you being cash poor when you have just bought a new  home with all the moving costs  - it teaches them life lessons in choices and budgeting. You can have multiple budgets on YNAB for free so you could always set the kids up with their own budgets to teach them when you/they are ready and discuss where they are spending etc

It seems that £30 is very well spent  for mental health, lack of breaking and your sanity and as you say having an office space to dump the  yet unpacked boxes  is great. Moving day  is so  stressful no matter how much prep you do that anything to minimise it

on the ynab i get the price is annoying but I honestly have saved £££'s in the last 9 months with it and the peace and organisation, control, tracking it has given me is priceless.
A fresh start sounds best - you dont need to add tracking accounts in the first days, you can leave the cc off and also ignore targets til you settled. Nick True's YNAB YT videos are so worth listening to, you can always alter as you go.
I have gone very granular so I have lots of categories but you can go super simple and add as you go.
I also add in repeat payments (monthly, annual etc) as scheduled transactions (just hit the date in ynab when you have paid something and set up the repeat) but again do that later when you have chance

When you have a moment can you detail the visualisation process you did? I need to do this for my home. Did you also print pics of future goals eg houses etc  as I have done before ? Completely get you are busy with unpacking so when you have a moment in the coming weeks I would appreciate it

  • @LadyWithAPlan I started following Nick after you said before I've not watched very much yet. I found a few shorter videos and tutorials that I've used too and have a good enough grasp however when I am transferring out of pots and then across from account to account and then out as a payment somewhere something is getting lost in translation and I don't know what I've done wrong?! I've just done a fresh start and given up on the old one. New home is new costs anyway so 🤣🤷‍♀️

The savings. ..I thought I'd done well having extra 10% buffer.... clearly I needed like 300% buffer 🤣

The visualisation/ manifestation process I use is explained quite well in The Secret.   They have videos of it and also Audibooks or you can get a copy of the book pretty cheap these days. A vision board is key to mine though as I'm a visual person. Other people might do better with mantras over and over. But the key to a very quick turnaround on what you're asking for is to ask for something you truly believe you can get/ achieve. Ask, believe it to be true already, speak to to people as if it's already happened and feel excited/ happy/ however you'd feel if this thing you've asked for is yours (feel it throughout your whole body the excitement you draw it to you quicker) and then be open to receiving it in anyway the universe delivers. Do not be too set on ideas and outcomes. Ask for what you want & finish it off with 'or something better'. I've achieved everything on my vision board that I set out to do a few months ago....so making a new one soon 😁🙏♥️
