  • Seriously a JAM Sandwich? There is zilch nutritional value in that and surely you are a grown man not a child in school? ( not that jam sandwiches are allowed in schools cos of the lack of nutrition )

@Rosa_Damascena I'm sure we are all different, but where do the smells end? Food, meat, fast food takeaway, aftershave, deodorant, handcream. I just think we have to have some level of tolerance when working alongside colleagues.

I quit a job once where a colleague's pathological sebacious odour really bothered me. It wasn't the main reason I moved on, but it was a tipping point.

I think that starting with something simple like adding a bit of fruit and either some nuts, a hard boiled egg, or some cheese would help will feeling fuller. You may also want to consider having something around as an afternoon snack option in case you have to stay late. If you've got a desk at work, can you leave something there like a bag of mixed nuts or some oatcakes and peanut butter/sandwich paste/marmite in case you are working late.

Do you have breakfast before going to work?

  • @JIL - I just found out that the Aldi's here sells peanut butter powder. I saw it for the first time last week. I had never heard of it before either. Now I am trying to figure out all of the things to do with it - add to puddings and oatmeal? What else?

Peanut sauce! E.g. on Indonesian style Satay, but I use it for a curry like sauce (with added heat) too.

(Apologies if this question was only for @JIL)

  • Thanks again, lots of ideas and again too many for me to reply to individually.

I honestly had no idea jam sandwiches were considered to be rubbish. I guess it's always been in my nature to scrimp on lunch. When I was at school my parents gave me £1.30 to spend at the canteen for lunch and eventually I'd just make do with a chocolate bar that cost 30p and keep the remaining pound for myself.

I am willing to spend more than 30p on my lunch but I do think £4 is too much. That's over £1k a year. Realistically what is the minimum I would need to spend?

I don't eat breakfast because I've never been able to get out of bed until 5 minutes before I need to leave for work no matter what time I've started work at. I think the dread of going to work keeps me there because I can get up earlier at the weekend when I have a substantial breakfast, lunch and dinner.

In defence of the aforesaid jam sandwich - its marginally better for you than a jam doughnut and kind of fills the same hunger pang....everything has its place in the universe :D

The scrimping on food bit, I agreed with until fairly recently. I can resist rubbish as long as the price point makes it an unreasonable purchase! Put a YS on it and I am still highly vulnerable.
