There is zero nutrition in jam- especially the cheapest variety.

At least add a piece of fruit (and an egg!!)

I loved this - and I don't even likke eggs! So well written, and Edna Dore is a joy.

Jam sandwiches are fine if you want calories but as @Katiehound says has little going for it nutritionally. As a fellow lazy person when it comes to kitchen matters, start with a chunk of cheese / some nuts for easy protein, then add some filling fruit / veg. If you still want your jam sandwich that can be dessert / an afternoon snack.

make a thin omelette, and use this instead of bread as a wrap. You can fill it with whatever takes your fancy

For goodness sake, based on your previous thread (https://forums.moneysavingexpert.com/discussion/6464568/how-has-this-house-gone-up-so-much/p1), there is little need for you to live the whole day on 30p lunch that doesn't do your health any good. You are in London - take advantage of that or move out! Or at least swap that bread for rice, porridge, lentils and other whole grains.

I work in an open plan office with an area for eating and nobody objects to curry smells.
They do draw the line at fishy though.

If you must eat that cheap bread, then pack it with protein inside. Or make it into toast and dip it into houmous. (You could make your own) or go American and put a layer of peanut butter on your jam sandwiches.

Make some high protein flapjack and have them mid afternoon or just eat a handful of nuts.

It's the lack of protein, I feel is your issue.

It's all very well saving money by not spending on things but if by not spending you're making yourself ill or not with it, or light headed etc, then you might as well spend a bit more and eat properly.

I can't imagine that would be tasty cold, just limp and greasy.

@JIL - I am highly sensitive to smells but I appreciate others aren't at all bothered by them. I don't think its too much to expect to work in a pleasant environment though, and one that reeks of food is not that.

Or make lentil wraps, super easy, soak red lentils in water, blend, use like a batter...

  • Recommending lots of protein is fine, but it tends to be quite expensive, especially if you're talking about chicken breasts and cold sliced meats.  How about peanut butter sandwiches on wholemeal seeded bread with a banana.  Or hard-boiled egg with tomato sandwiches.  Cheese is another option.  Soup, homemade if possible, is great and keeps you full for a long time.  Get a food flask and take leftovers of things like stew, casserole, bolognese, curry etc.
  • Do you like cream cheese? You can get a 200g tub for around 85p in Sainsbury’s.
