Disposable nappies: branded or non-branded?

As an expectant mum, I've been sent several money-off vouchers for Pampers & Huggies newborn nappies. I'll probably use up the vouchers to start, but in the long run was thinking I'd try out some of the cheaper supermarket/boots/superdrug 'own brand' nappies as well...basically, buy them as & when they're on special offer & see what they're like.
But I was just wondering what people's opinions were about whether or not the 'branded' nappies are actually any better than the non-brands?
Was there a particular nappy (branded or non) that you thought was better than the others, or do you think they're all much the same & it's not worth paying more for the brands?
I'm hoping not to start up the usual debate about disposables versus washables by asking this question...I have considered both types, but for several reasons it is not practical for me to use washables, at least initially.

Lidl nappies are very good and a lot cheaper than pmpers/huggies. But they do not do the first size(not in my local store anyhow)
I also used to buy asda nappies and they took the pampers/huggies vouchers, they too were good.
Also places like savers/quality save/bodycare can be cheaper than supermarkets for named nappies.
I did try the value nappies and they were rubbish. If you stick with the supermarket or boots own brand they are usely good. Although one brand might fit better depending on weather your baby is short and fat or long and thin and how much they wrigle around.JAN Grocery Challange £200

I found tesco's own nappies fine when babies are small and need changing lots, I used Huggies when they are bigger as they last much longer. It's good to have value brands in if they need a nappy an hour or two before bedtime and using a good quality one seems like a waste. I always use value first thing in the morning as no.2 waits for a clean nappy before he deposits. I guess it's a bit of trial and error. I've also got some washables just for a change of scenery....0

I use washables most of the time but when we are out and about we use the ones from Lidl which I found were better than some of the branded ones.
I used newborn huggies, pampers & sainsbury's new born nappies and found that they all did an adequate job, however I started using washables on baby a few weeks ago & they seem to be working out fine again.WW Gold Member, trying to maintain !!!Hayden born July 07Tabitha born April 05Poppy born July 030 -
Tescos own brand, without a doubt. In my opinion they are much much better than Pampers or Huggies. I also thought they fit really well - the tapes are really stretchy - in Pampers my little one (who is now toilet trained) was struggling to fit in the biggest size, but the next size down in the Tesco ones was ample.
They are the ones in the purple packets - and they usually have the big multipacks on at two for £14.

Another vote for Lidl's own from me!
Especially in a few years when the baby is in the big size and maybe just wearing them for bed....the better known brands aren't as big. And huggies tapes are so wide that they dig in.*** Friends are angels who lift us to our feet when our wings have trouble remembering how to fly ***
If I don't reply to you, I haven't looked back at the thread.....PM me0 -
asda's,tesco's,morrisons and boots own brands are all just as good if not better than pampers or huggies..... i personally buy mine from boots as they often have 3 for 2 and spend £25 on baby stuff and get 500 free points so a great saving......morrisons is also good for offers-at the moment they have 3 packs for £10......the morrisons ones are best for very wet children overnight,my daughter no 1 slept for between 13 and 15 hours overnight and these were the only ones not to leak.0

my first was born nearly 9 years ago but i remember sainsburys and boots own brand nappies were as good as the pampers or huggies. i didn't try any others because we didn't have all the shops around here then. there were times when one brand was better than others, depending on if he was chubby around the legs or not. asda or tesco will accept your pampers and huggies vouchers off your shopping - you don't have to buy those nappies, so try the sample nappies if you have them (from bounty packs etc. and i think huggies post sample newborn nappies out) if you want to sample them for fit but then don't feel obliged to carry on using them, just take advantage of the coupons lol! my asda and tesco will both take coupons for things you haven't bought, for up to ten percent of your shopping, but in tesco it's only one coupon for each brand so you can't use 2 pampers coupons on the same shop.
i don't know which brands are best overnight for holding in wetness though - my baby had diarrhoea constantly until he was 3 years old (milk allergy i think, he doesn't have dairy now) so nappy changes were frequent.
back then you had to use pampers coupons to buy pampers nappies, nobody took them for anything else so i did buy pampers and huggies when they were on special. i don't think they were any better than the boots or sainsburys nappies. this time i've bought washables but will be using disposables for holidays, visiting relatives and possibly overnight too. i'm going to buy them from boots, whatever's on special, and with the 500 extra points when spending over £25.52% tight0 -
I don't think there's an enormous difference between nappies, these days branded ones and shops' own (not value) are all pretty adequate. I think in many cases it's down to personal preference, size of baby, baby's age, toilet habits, etc etc. You'll just have to see what works for you!
I usually have several brands/non-brands on the go. As rovers said before, it's good to have cheap nappies for when they need changing not long before bath time.
I've usually found Pampers very good, especially now that my little one is in pull-ups. I use a lot of vouchers in Tesco, so that brings the price of nappies down considerably.
And a word of advice in case you have a little boy - I was so silly as a new first-time mum I was convinced it was the nappies' fault - but little boys need er... 'positioning' to make sure the nappies don't leak...0 -
We found the Tesco and Aldi ones great and they were as good if not better than pampers etc. When my son was in pampers they altered the range and everyone leaked. I took them back to tescos for a refund and the girl on the counter told me to write and complain. I did and they sent me a £10 voucher which I used on wipes! The best bargains are priceless!!!!!!!!!! :T :T :T0
