We didn’t set off till mid afternoon but got here in time for tea. I did all my last-minute jobs except watering the pots in the garden.
It was a bit of a costly morning as, after discussion, we’ve opted for separate rail cards instead of the Two Together that we had before. This allows DH to lose about £1.40 on a trip he has planned soon, but more than win it back on a day trip this week - and of course we can do separate trips and still benefit. I feel rather shocked at getting my first ‘Senior’ card, so I did my makeup and put on a flattering colour for the photo! ☺️That was £30 for DH’s and £70 for mine as I went for the three year digital version (saves £20). Also put it on my CC to get a few pennies of Clubcard points, but completely forgot I could have used said points to pay for it and thus got it cheaper!
I also finally got round to transferring to my Regular savings account.
I’m quite proud of myself for resisting coffee at the services. It was only habit not need.
Shopping this evening was £12.81. It would have been £15.06 but I wrestled my little-used loyalty app back into action and got some discounts. We had to put the heating on when we got here but it’s all cosy now. I spent the journey unravelling some crochet. I know there was a lot of work in it but it it just wasn’t turning into anything I’d use. I’ll see if I can find another pattern for the yarn. It’s sock weight so perhaps I should brave making garish socks? I’ve also brought some mending - limited internet could turn out to be useful!I think a bit of sunshine is good for frugal living. Last night was early to bed but too tired to sleep well. We are more rested now though. This morning we wandered round the town and had a few charity shop finds (https://forums.moneysavingexpert.com/discussion/comment/80998216/#Comment_80998216) as well as some sticky buns and oranges for DH.I’m very pleased with my purchases: looking forward to getting them home and washed though the dress, still with the original tags, isn’t going to need it and I might wear it tomorrow if the weather stays warm (it’s tee shirt weather today)
Spending so far:
Sticky buns £2.10
oranges £2
Dress £8
3 scarves for £1
book £1
2x DVDs £1
Data top up £8.50I think a bit of sunshine is good for frugal living. (Cranky40)

I read about the dress on the charity shop thread. What a bargain!Made it to mortgage free but what a muddle that became
In the event the proverbial hits the fan then co-habitees are better stashing their cash than being mortgage free !!1 -
Thanks @Watty1, it almost feels a shame to take the original shop tags off to wear it, so I have to be grown up about this. 🙂
My lunch was porridge with lots of lovely fruit and a cappuccino, sustaining enough to take me round the shops in Melrose (admired but didn’t go in some very interesting-looking food shops). We were a bit concerned about the car which began leaking water when parked. DH topped up everything in sight and nothing more went through so we now have bottled water in the car and an unsolved mystery. The temperature is where it should be and there are no new noises or people running after us waving bits of machinery, so I don’t know what happened.
I couldn’t choose between two pairs of jeans in a charity shop so got both (£7 and £5 respectively). One is for ‘best’ and the other for cold weather, as my current work jeans could give up on me at any point and there’s another scruffy pair lined up to take their place. I also found a kitchen storage jar for £2.50.
We very much wanted to go to a second hand/antique book shop we’d been in before and were sad to see he’s closing on 24th of next month. I think the owner is also sad to be stopping. DH bought a book then we went on a very steep walk up the hill with great views.
There was a short but expensive bit of shopping for the bottled water and a small tin of hot chocolate for me. I left the larger one, that cost about 45p more, at home and was missing my bed time drink.
This evening we had chip shop fish and chips and a local twilight walk, then watched a Star Wars film, which eventually totally engrossed me though I think the Jedi were more credible before they learned those gravity-defying leaps. All in all a very satisfactory day but we are both worn out now.I think a bit of sunshine is good for frugal living. We had a lovely day in Edinburgh today: cloudless blue sky and perfect weather for the new dress, so it’s been worn and enjoyed. We went by train and accidentally bought the right tickets. 🤣 The station was unmanned and only one ticket machine was working, and the train came in so we were flurried and thought we had only bought singles, but they printed out as returns so no need to buy more later.
The idea was to go to the National Galleries for lunch, see some art, have the obligatory coffee and cake and maybe look round some shops but the weather was so gorgeous we bought from M&S Foodhall and sat out on the grass for ages to eat and relax (along with lots of other sun lovers). The gallery was really good: it’s one to go back to as there’s so much we didn’t get round to. Coffee and cake was out in the park again and we didn’t bother with shops apart from the one in the gallery. We didn’t buy anything apart from rail tickets and food, but it’s been a really good day.
On the way home the family WhatsApp started up with photos from A and family (in America) and D in Turkey (we had no idea he was going). Looks like glorious weather everywhere.
This evening was h/m curry, a quick walk to the shop for bread, a wander round parts of the town we’d not explored before and a hilarious hour or so watching Lego Star Wars.I think a bit of sunshine is good for frugal living. (Cranky40)

A P.S. to the above: main courses in the galleries’ eatery were over £20 each and we paid £10 for our picnic with free sunshine, so that was a happy bit of money saving, though I think the afternoon snack would have been another £10.I think a bit of sunshine is good for frugal living. (Cranky40)

Cherryfudge - did you have any air conditioning on? Ours always had a water overflow when we parked. (Now we don't have any as had to turn it completely off. We drive a Mitsubishi Lancer and they tend to turn their own air conditioning on overnight and run down the battery - discovered by our wonderful repair person who unfortunately just retired.)2

I'm glad you're having a lovely time away and hopefully not thinking about rotas, courses or work in any way, shape or form. What great bargains you've found in the charity shops!I get knocked down but I get up again (Chumbawamba, Tubthumping)3
