I think this has been what's termed a 'dreich day'. Steady drizzle, unbroken cloud and windy at times. I didn't get out at all, though it wasn't cold out.

I'd promised to do some baking as DH has offered some for a fund raiser and was getting anxious about when to fit it in. First, clear the surfaces in the kitchen which led to a deep clean of the cooker top and various bits of washing up, after which, if I remember rightly, I had a brew and a rest.

There were courgettes to use up so I made the soup that SA recommended, which has a real wow-factor and has gone in the recipe collection for future reference. There are a couple more portions for future use.

That was nice and healthy, which I rather spoiled by having the free doughnut to follow.

After lunch I struggled to get going and even fetched a hot water bottle as I was getting cold, then gave up and tried to have a doze, which at least warmed me up even if I'm not aware of having slept. Finally after that I made some lemon drizzle muffins for the fund raiser, then reheated some of yesterday's casserole with rice for dinner. The cooking warmed the house up too.

I've not spent anything but asked DH to get sugar and he's also replenished tinned foodstuffs.

The preparing for winter thread has helpfully given me all sorts of ideas for practical foodstuffs to put in the 'emergency cupboard' (once the meringues have moved over). I've written out a list so I can shop for some over the next few weeks and make better use of the space.

I confess I've done very little towards the Sunday session for the children, but I've had a quick look. There's a nice activity suggested so we will do that with the story, and as well as the usual safe-for-all-known allergies biscuits I will probably put some bits of fruit as there's fruit in the story. There's also a naming game where we say thank you for each child which I think would go well after last week, where one or two children really lit up when their name was put into a song. In fact, a lot of the thinking has been done for me.

We've had a good day: DH had spotted the Turner exhibition in Newcastle which we intended to go to the other week but I was working. We then had to go today as it closes tomorrow. It was worth seeing though a bit busy - there's only so much room in front of The Fighting Temeraire. However, some genius had placed it opposite a poignant, beautifully shot video of the Ark Royal being towed to be broken up. I was so glad I stopped to watch the video - I vaguely remember hearing about the Ark Royal at the time so it felt more real.

I spotted TK M axx on the way out so we had a quick look at DH found trainers to replace a holey pair.

We also had some good baked potatoes in the café and finished up the courgette soup for tea. DH then baked cakes for the fund raiser tomorrow. He missed me telling him one box of eggs was out of date so that cake is now for us to eat (always a silver lining...) but he had to run to the shop for more ingredients. He's determined to take two cakes and he does make a good Victoria sandwich.

The washing I did this morning was just ready to iron so that's all done.

    Expenditure@
Parking £2.20 an hour - will see what that adds up to when DH's CC statement comes through.
Lunch and coffee - also on DH's card.
Clothing £34.99 - on my card so I get the loyalty points, will have to get in there and pay it off tomorrow or asap.
Housekeeping - unknown, paid for by DH.

Came over all tired and headachey last night, possibly from playing on my phone too much while travelling. Kitchen was a bit of an ingredients explosion which I cleared up but both DH and I were pushing ourselves a bit and need to learn to limit how much we expect from ourselves.

I woke up in the middle of the night to find the head ache had gone and my ankle was hurting. I can't remember doing anything to it but I was probably sitting awkwardly in the car. I kept me awake for an hour or so despite ibuprofen and a hot water bottle and there's still a slight ache this morning, but it's always worse in the middle of the night. Just an odd thing to happen.

DH is helping with the cake stall this morning and has also cooked some apples and had a go at fixing a sliding door that's been sticking. I'm about to put towels in to wash though the sky is very grey so I hope I can dry them okay. Mostly I've been going through July's neglected bank statements but there's still work to do there. September's are up to date to yesterday (yay!) but some things there may still change.

I've been giving thought to the admin job at church that may come available, and come to the conclusion I need a chat with the person doing it at present to see what's involved. I can do all the answering phone calls and written stuff but I'm not sure who handles payroll. I found a copy of the the JD from when the post was last advertised (which may change of course) and the pay and hours would suit me, though it's term time only and I'm already wondering if some of that could be annualised, both for their sake and mine. This, before it's been advertised at all!

Jobs today include making a cardboard tree, as one does, drawing up a running order for tomorrow and checking the meeting agenda which will just be a rerun of last week's, cut down. I've also to reply to A who asked me if I'd like to go to a showing of our favourite film tomorrow evening. I think I will as we don't get much time together.

Got through the day's list, but the resulting running order seems a bit haphazard. I've not mastered the transition from story time to activity time to drink-and-a-biscuit time. I won't worry about it too much.

I need to get to bed soon so I am up and about in the morning in good time.

It's been another warm, grey day. DH spent most of the morning helping with the cake stall and I did a lot of wading through a couple of bank statements. I thought July's finances looked good till I realised they didn't include the first eleven days. Ah well.

I did a hot wash and eventually the rain gave up enough for them to get mostly dry on the line. We had a walk into town for Dh to get new slippers (£15) and me to get a couple of bits for the craft activity tomorrow. The cardboard tree now has removable velcro'd fruit. On the way back I bumped into the friend with the fracture, which seems to be healing as it should. Not long afterwards, DH saw our former neighbour and asked her in so she could see her old garden. We have an invitation to go round to theirs next month for lunch.

This evening has been a hotchpotch of bits of things for tomorrow, finishing by making snakes out of paper plates for the children to colour in. Not sure this is my greatest art work.

    Right.
    Bed.
Now while there's some night left to sleep in.

  • My sister has a cockapoo because her daughter-in-law is allergic to dogs and this one causes no problems at all. This is a big dog about the size of a full-sized poodle and likes to ride in the side car of my brother-in-law''s motorcycle.
