I once had to text my sister at 3am to ask if my percentage calculation on my degree thesis was correct.
I wish they taught maths in a narrative way, I would have been so much better at it.

I once had to explain to a maths graduate that you can't average percentages that are done on different bases. He was my boss too!

Ouch! - clearly math before tech helps it stick in the brain. When I did my uni degree, we were only allowed scientific calculators in certain courses. Compared to the current ciriculum of the same course where specialized calculators are expected! How things change!

He needed you. 😊
My Dad told me how, when he was training for his career as a draftsman, things had to be worked out entirely without aid: you had to be able to measure round a hill and come back to with X of the starting point, X being something like 12 ". He said it was odd, because once you were qualified, you could use a slide rule for everything.
Who remembers slide rules? 😁

I've been stuck at home all day, enjoying the glorious autumn sun through the window and with my feet on a hot water bottle. However, I'm quite well, my only affliction being the need to work. In the morning I mapped out some rota possibilities and contacted a few people: so far I've had a yes, a no and a puzzling 'I'm available' which the thing in the app that warns of clashes says is not the case. I hope I can get that clear quite soon as I have a couple more people to contact and I need a certain amount to be okay before I drift anyone else into the gaps.
In the afternoon I found a course on recreational Maths which looks interesting. I added a few Maths words to the glossary I'm making for myself and learned about Magic Squares but it will take a while because there's so much that's vaguely remembered but without any meaning still attached to it.
This morning I scrabbled through the freezer in the quest to use things up, as we have no more space. The result was a ready-made chickpea tikka for dinner tonight, and the freezer contents have ebbed back and filled the gap already, like quicksand.
The receipt has come through for the solar deposit, so we now have impetus.
At least nothing's been spent by me, though DH has done his usual raid on Sa1ns for the discounted pastries!

My flu jab was booked for 8.45 this morning so I was up in time to run the washing machine and dishwasher, and charge up a few things. The injection was so slight I could hardly feel it, let alone the 'sharp scratch'. So far I'm not noticing after effects, but I'm thankfully not prone to them.
It was the last car boot of the season (we've not been since August) and the old trees around the filed were truly lovely with autumn colours. I spent £5.50: 50p on a Beswick foal (damaged) and £5 on children's books. The lady selling the books said they were American and had belonged to her husband, and some from his mother. They seem to date from the early 1960s onwards - great reading material for the girls (I've been looking for a copy of The Little Red Hen for them) especially as DGD2 is learning her letters at speed.
I've now had a lovely autumnal coffee and have been playing on the computer, but I've also added the Maths programme on my Duolingo to make me think numbers. The early stages are straightforward enough but one type of question, where there are several blanks in a sum to fill, seems to be a bit much when my brain is tired. I think it's a new way of looking at things so I'll get used to it.
DH is getting some exercise before lunch then we plan to go out for coffee and a walk.
