When we get nearer our birthday (mine is a few days after yours) I will tell you how much older I am.  Beware the Ides of March!  The anniversary of Julius Caesar's assassination.

Takes me right back to secondary school and studying Shakespeare's Julius Caesar! Mum's birthday was near mine and she used to mention the Ides of March, too. I never found out why you can't have an Ide, singular. If you know, please explain!

So Mr T is discriminating against those who may be associated with a plot against Caesar? :D

  • I was reading an explanation of the Ides of March in a book in the last few weeks. If only I could remember which one.

The Ide is the 15th regardless of month - as in the middle of.  It is only Julius Caesar that made the Ides of March famous.  Well actually the witch I think, who told him to beware the Ides of March

Fascinating! And this time when I looked, I found more info - I'd never thought of Googling for the Ides of a month as opposed to 'what is an ide?'.

    Ides of March - Wikipedia

According to the above, the Romans regarded the Ides of March as, among other things, the day for settling debts. So it's right on topic for this forum. :)

So work was fine and I think I might have four shifts in two weeks' time as well as three next week. The manager has been slaving over rotas as she's going to be off and there aren't enough staff. I can see they are advertising again, so I'm wondering about asking if any morning shifts are going. Even if I took one extra, that would be useful money and I have a couple of mornings that are too quiet. I do benefit from some time to myself, so I need to bear that in mind.

Nothing bought (again): as Friday is early finish, I realised I could be home in time to eat with DH, which meant the shops weren't so tempting. We had tuna pasta and finished off the bread pudding.

I started a spreadsheet to examine our Mr T spending but I think it will end up as an old fashioned list. Still, any spreadsheet practice is useful.

It was a misty, damp morning and evening here, though the afternoon cheered up enough for us to get out. DH has been going round finding bits of painting that got missed and filling in the gaps, and also bought bags of apples on the market where they are £1 a bag, and refills of some spices from the eco shop.

We reverted to chip shop fish and chips at lunch time which was nice but we still intend to have shop-bought more often. DH went for a walk later and I cleaned out the bird feeders, which were starting to sprout a couple of very small lawns. Don't worry, I disinfected everything afterwards. Then I remembered DH was out of toothpaste so we had a walk into town: DH to buy pastries and I to get toothpaste! I do tend to know where I can get it cheaply, but apparently this one tastes bad.  :s The good news is, I got myself one that I like. :)

I had spent some of the morning unpicking a waistband from a skirt I must have bought forty years ago. I know the waist was tight even then but now it's 12" too small. It's a gathered skirt, though, and a bit of a favourite, so I'm happy to see it's opened out to an overall waist of about two yards! :D I went to see if I could buy a heavy-duty elastic to make a new waistband, and on the way across the shop was second on the scene as a lady fell on the stairs. She was understandably shaken and a younger woman was looking after her as the shop staff were on their way. She started trying to stand but seemed to be in pain so I encouraged her to stay and get her breath. After a few minutes she got to her feet and staff found her a chair, so it was all out of our hands. In a very odd way it was reassuring to me to slide back into that role of supporting someone through a difficult moment: it was part of life for me for some time, and I've missed it despite all the stress it caused. I did manage to speak to the lady again after I made my purchase and she was recovering.

On the way home I decided to try !celand for bargains and did very nicely: half price on gammon, tomatoes, apples, milk and hot cross buns.

This evening I've been trying to sort out the children's activity for tomorrow: they're getting Noah's ark again. I think I did it back in the autumn but when you're three, that's a very long time ago. I remembered I'd promised to get something for them to drink, so I did a late run to the supermarket and went to see if the arts and crafts section held any inspiration, which it did, but when I got home I found that various discounts hadn't gone through. I will try to call in tomorrow and hope the shelf edges still show the same as they did earlier so I can get photos and claim it back.

    Expenditure:
    Medical £4.87
Stationery £8 (which I think should have been £2.50)
Toys (bubble blowers) £1.90 (shelf edge 95p)
    Housekeeping (complicated):
    me - £12.26
DH £2 (market), approx, £2 (spices), ?? pastries, £7.50 fish and chips.

  • Love doing Noah’s Ark with children. At our church they took the children into the next door field and measured it out so that the children had an idea of size and scale. Quite a memorable morning!!

Well done on starting the job. Is the TA role due to start soon as well?

That sounds a lot of fun, we don't have a field but the children have been asking for us to refill the water play feature, so we're going to do that. It's at infant table height and has all sort of hoses and things that spin round when water goes through, so I will look out the mop too!

The TA job started first, I added the cleaning when I realised there were unlikely to be enough hours in it. Last term I helped out with a wellbeing group, which was lovely. This term it's Maths - a bit of a learning curve for me!

The children seem to have enjoyed their morning, though when I arrived, the decorating team had nearly finished (the room is being transformed from a nightclub look-alike in the days when teenagers used it, to something a lot more suitable for little-ies) and things had been moved so I was stressed! Thankfully one of the decorators arrived shortly after me and told me where everything was, and gradually my stress subsided. After that things fell into place, more or less, though at the end of the story a few of them had wandered off so we didn't do the singing. I'm perfectly okay with that!

DH made dinner: the gammon done in the slow cooker was lush, and we've used up some broccoli as well as having carrot, peas and tomatoes, so it was probably reasonably good for us too.

First thing this morning it was raining heavily and there was standing water on the lawn but now it's sunny and the skirt I started to alter yesterday is washed and blowing on the washing line in the hope of de-creasing it (if you see what I mean) ready for the new waistband. I've been enjoying this little outburst of sewing activities recently, so I hope it gives me a restful way of relaxing over the next week, other than the computer.
