Sarahspangles said:I take my sketching things, but it never occurred to me to knit! I couldn’t imagine working on a sweater on a sun lounger, and the weight would be a consideration.Has anyone flown recently with needles in hand luggage? And knitted on a plane? Some fine bamboo DPNs would fit in my pencil case. My next project is gloves and hat in fingering yarn.
But socks or gloves, ideal for just lazily knitting... or a lacy scarf, all kinds of smaller, lighter things.
There's lots of debate about knitting needles and flying- in theory, I believe now all airlines no longer list them as forbidden- BUT people do still have anecdotes about being stopped within the last year, on small and large airlines...
I wouldn't risk it myself- you just never know, and I'd hate to have anything confiscated!
I rarely fly, but last time I did in 2015 was when I taught myself to crochetThey seem fine with crochet hooks...

@PipneyJane, I love your style.
Molto elegante (as Duolingo keeps telling me).
@Sarahspangles, I've not flown all that recently but usually the airlines have details on their websites of what type of needles, if any, are permitted. Some might be allowed in the hold, if not in hand luggage. Bamboo are more likely to be permitted than metal, but going into Australia some years ago, I had to declare mine as they are plant material and Australia is very strict on limiting anything that might affect the biology.I think a bit of sunshine is good for frugal living. @Sarahspangles - you mean there are people who don't take needlework on holiday?!?! I mean, yes, obviously folk who are not needleworkers, but surely everyone who does knitting or crochet or sewing would take something with them to work on???Has anyone flown recently with needles in hand luggage? And knitted on a plane? Some fine bamboo DPNs would fit in my pencil case. My next project is gloves and hat in fingering yarn.
As mentioned above, my usual travel knitting is a sock. My knitting bag is a small makeup bag that I can stuff in my handbag, but a pencil case could do well. I keep my needles tidy (and protected) in a DPN needle holder, this one is by Clover:Also in shot is the Swiss Army credit-card-sized widget that contains tiny scissors a 1 inch knife and a sewing pin. That normally accompanies me on the plane too. I have only ever had one problem and that was when transiting in Bali. They confiscated the widget.

ETA: that is a regular row counter, dangling from a stitch marker ring
ETA-again: before I got the DPN holder, I had a couple of breakages due to stress on the needles when packed. None since"Be the type of woman that when you get out of bed in the morning, the devil says 'Oh crap. She's up.'

According to .gov.uk knitting needles are allowed on planes but there are references online to local policy being different. I shall report how it goes…..Fashion on the Ration

There are other brands: I have Clover ones and Knitpro ones (marketed as Knitpro DPN Tubes), but nobody has any of them in stock. I searched.
The Swiss Army widget came from Amazon. This is the same, but a different colour. I’ve had it for 10+ years. I’d forgotten it had a pen - amazingly, that still works. (I have an older one in my main knitting bag, a present from my ex-in-laws so 30-ish years old and not to be lost. Amazingly, the pen in that still works too!)

I had a small pair of fingernail scissors and a lip balm confiscated on a Canadian flight! I had my tour groups take plastic scissors that only cut paper (designed for children) on our family history flights. Two sharp pencils could fill in as knitting needles.7
