We saw a small grove bamboo knitting needles in the Blue Mountains, believed to have been dropped by absent-minded tourists, but it's believed to have been destroyed in the wildfires of 2020 so I was lucky to see it while I did.

Yes, me.  I have been a frequent flyer with knitting, most recently in July 2023 when we went to Miami, always with wooden DPN’s.

As mentioned above, my usual travel knitting is a sock.  My knitting bag is a small makeup bag that I can stuff in my handbag, but a pencil case could do well.  I keep my needles tidy (and protected) in a DPN needle holder, this one is by Clover:

Also in shot is the Swiss Army credit-card-sized widget that contains tiny scissors a 1 inch knife and a sewing pin.  That normally accompanies me on the plane too.  I have only ever had one problem and that was when transiting in Bali.  They confiscated the widget.

ETA:  that is a regular row counter, dangling from a stitch marker ring

ETA-again:  before I got the DPN holder, I  had a couple of breakages due to stress on the needles when packed.  None since

I’m coveting that SwissCard, even though I have travel versions of all the tools apart from a blade! I like nicely designed things. I can’t see a DPN holder online but it’s a similar shape to the tube OH’s cycling tablets come in.

According to .gov.uk knitting needles are allowed on planes but there are references online to local policy being different. I shall report how it goes…..

@Sarahspangles These are the only DPN holders I could find online that are currently on sale:  https://www.knitpicks.com/sock-knitting-needle-holders/p/80601 They sell to the UK.

There are other brands:  I have Clover ones and Knitpro ones (marketed as Knitpro DPN Tubes), but nobody has any of them in stock.  I searched.

The Swiss Army widget came from Amazon.  This is the same, but a different colour.  I’ve had it for 10+ years.  I’d forgotten it had a pen - amazingly, that still works.  (I have an older one in my main knitting bag, a present from my ex-in-laws so 30-ish years old and not to be lost.  Amazingly, the pen in that still works too!)

I had a small pair of fingernail scissors and a lip balm confiscated on a Canadian flight! I had my tour groups take plastic scissors that only cut paper (designed for children) on our family history flights. Two sharp pencils could fill in as knitting needles.

That's a nifty little project, and nice way to use up scrap fabric.
