Grandma Donna has put this link in her blog about 1940s clothes in America.
The choice is wonderful. Look at all of the buttons on the coats, when we are limiter to five at most.
The corsets look frightening, like upholstering furniture.

The Utility Clothing Scheme designers did try.

American catalogues were amazing, in the way that I remember Argos was, when they first opened in the UK. Except you couldn’t also equip your own farm from the Argos book!

Those clothes look so glamorous and feminine, don't they?  Hollywood stars probably were admired for what they wore as well as their acting and singing skills!

Oh they were- if you read journals and diaries from the 1930s-40s, they quite often mention going to the pictures, and being wowed by the clothes, the hair (Veronica Lake!) and very very often mentioned: the hats...!
Someone - I think perhaps my Mum - told me that hair was more important in the UK due to clothes rationing. I found the Pathe factory film fascinating: I wanted to have a go at working one of those cutting machines!
I think a bit of sunshine is good for frugal living. (Cranky40)
The sun's been out and I think I’m solar powered (Onebrokelady)
