Bold leap into retirement

One of my last ‘proper’ conversations with my dad about two years ago was about retirement. He was really encouraging - and he and I were/are considered the family’s workaholics. I wish he was going to be around to help me enjoy mine, but at least I know he enjoyed his.katejo said:
I haven't got my parents to tell now. I did mention retirement briefly when at my brother's for Christmas. No interest shown at all so I didn't tell them any details.Haven't told my mum (dad died last year) and will pretend I am still working when retired to her lol!Fashion on the Ration

We are the youngest amongst our immediate circle of friends to retire and it can be quite awkward at times.Sarahspangles said:In my case people I work with have known for months, most are pleased but I can see it’s thought-provoking for some. With friends and family I’m being more vague. Some around my own age, including a sister, still have three or four years to go, and currently have caring responsibilities where retirement would make a big difference. I don’t feel guilty, I’m just trying to be sensitive.
Two couples in particular that we know well are going to have to work for a good few years, potentially past SPA and it can be a bit difficult at dinner parties. For instance, I've just changed my car, whereas one of the friends is driving a real old banger, he has no choice, so I end up dressing things up by saying we had to change the car because the other one had gone wrong and needed a load of money spent on it, not true, but it sort of softens it. Both the couples in question have been through divorces and are actually both just hopeless with money, but I still feel awkward.3 -
19 working days left, and today was a day that just reinforces why it is time to go. Tick tock...pterri said:One more week down, about five to go. Can. Not. Wait. Finding it surprisingly stressful even though I know I’m out of here soon. Beautiful day out side, I’d love to get on my bike and cycle somewhere….Personal Responsibility - Sad but True

April 4th is my last day in the office (annual leave after that) are we on a similar timeline?cloud_dog said:

Unbelievably my employer has agreed to pay me for the untaken leave (6 days). You could have blown me down with a feather.
Interestingly if I stayed until your (office) leave date (4 April), that would be 31 years working for my employer, to the day 😯Personal Responsibility - Sad but True

It appears there are a lot of people who plan their stoppage to coincide with the end / start of the financial year

In my case, it’s the point they would need to extend my contract, and I asked them not to. My last day will be the 28th and the clocks go forward on the 30th so the timing couldn’t be better! I’ll probably get up earlier than I do for work with the prospect of playing out….cloud_dog said:It appears there are a lot of people who plan their stoppage to coincide with the end / start of the financial year
