Excellent work, you have knocked it out of the park for sure. You have more than earned an amazing retirement by doing those extra years, and you now have the money to pay for it!

Also, it must feel good being able to help the kids out. You have ticked every box, you must be feeling pretty chuffed!

Thanks for the kind responses, as many will know I have found it difficult to stop work, but have finally done it.

I have already recieved a text from my old bosses boss to come back in a more senior position with higher pay, however im trying to resist it. Mentally I find it difficult 😔

Think of it that you would be swapping time (which we have only have a finite, unknown amount of, which reduces with each minute that passes), for money (which you certainly do not need). Stay strong!

Congrats, & well done SCB!
I am also absolutely certain you will be able to spend WAY more than £3K pcm…..I think in a couple of years you will discover the bigger problem will be avoiding a chunk of IHT payable by the offspring!
A way round that would be to take more than £3k pcm in regular income, and make regular gifts from excess income. The stumbling block is that ISAs are kind of exempt from being regular income, unless it is dividends….

Any immediate plans for the year ahead?

When I finished work I had a series of phone calls from my old department head offering me several different roles.They went something like this.

1st call - sorry we are moving and doing a full house reservation.

2nd call - sorry I'm still getting the new place straight.

3rd call - sorry my dad isn't so good these days I'm helping care for him.

Last call - (Old boss) Hi, I know you don't want the job but I have an action to ring and offer it to you and just wanted to tick it off. Anyway how are you?

My 'retirement' actually starts with almost 6 weeks paid holiday, so I can handle another 4 weeks of being available!

our big trip has been planned for a long time - a lesser version was booked to celebrate the A levels that never happened but that got cancelled due to Covid. It was easier to spend big on this one (safari) since OH is still working. The next one will be a bigger test. Not sure what that will be yet but a close relative has just got engaged in New Zealand so maybe that'll be a trigger.
