In case useful for anyone : I took my own "bold leap into retirement" a year ago now, and here's a brief summary.Financial costs I didn't expect:A lot of spending on our dog, while we had insurance, the cover would not stretch to multiple events linked to the same disease, and specialist vet investigations. This came to around £4.5k.Costs that I did expect:Repairing some bits in the house and garden (downstairs loo, garden fence etc)Buying more plants for the gardenOther things I didn't expect:A lot of illness, especially in the first few months of retirement, including a cancer operation (caught early, hopefully no further effects) and the recuperation from this was quite slow.A lot of other health costs including a lot extra on specific health needs (hearing, teeth, eyes) - While I did expect of course that some of these things would happen, I didn't expect quite so many of them to occur in the first few months. This summary just seems to be a reminder for me that you never know what is coming your way......14

My employer chosen health insurance company kindly said they would offer me a special follow on employee rate to take it private when I left...it was 10 times more than I got through a private broker. Look around..0
