Bank transfer before for car?
Comments
-
Bought a new car from a franchised dealer a few months ago. In the past I paid on the day of collection by debit card but this time dealer said that wasn't possible as debit card payments were being charged the same as credit cards by their bank. Paid by bank transfer before collecting the car. No problem.0

They want yoi to pay before the seeing the vehicle? No chance.1

Is this a brand new car from a Franchised Dealer?
If so, my preference would be to pay on the day by debit card while I am at the premises.
Having said that, I purchased a brand new car myself earlier in the year and the requirement then was to pay by BACS in full a couple of days in advance. Give it was from a main dealer, I was accepting enough to do so.
EDIT: have you paid any part of the cost (deposit?) by credit card? If you have, that would offer some additional protection in the unlikely event that the Franchised Dealer ceased trading between you paying and then collecting the car.0 -
They will have an end of year target to meet so you call the shots. No reason why you cannot pay the final chunk once you’ve had a quick once-over of the car first thing. You may find £7k is above the limit for new payments so will need to do it from a branch rather than an app. Yes it’s a hassle if you’re not with a clearing bank as they can sometimes be slow for faster payments but if you are with one of the big ones (and you mentioned you’ve spoken already) they should have the cash in seconds.
Even if your are far away - an overnight hotel stay or early start is a small price to pay for peace of mind…0 -
Hi everyone. Huge thanks for the advice. I didn’t want to leave the dealership info here for their confidentiality. But yes they are reputable. Looked at companies house and Facebook reviews and have emailed staff on their site website. Seem credible. Car is cheaper as I’m a nurse. They do deals for military, nurses etc, blue light. The car is £17 k new ….tallies with the ORP from a dealer. With my car part exchange that’s why it’s £7k deposit. I’ve decided I’m not handing over any money until I’m there and I’ll do by bank transfer at the time. The car is a UK model and I have the reg but it’s not yet registered with the DVLA so I’m asking for that first too. I can ring my bank from the dealer at the time. Yes they could also haggle on my cars p/e too.Again thanks.

If it’s a new car they will register and tax it on the day. No reason to do it beforehand. If they don’t provide drive away insurance then you just need to provide a cover note.
If you are asking them to register early then yes you will be expected to pay first. Personally I would just get them to register whilst I grabbed a coffee in the showroom…1 -
Why? It's not needed to tax a car any more.WellKnownSid said:If it’s a new car they will register and tax it on the day. No reason to do it beforehand. If they don’t provide drive away insurance then you just need to provide a cover note.

No idea why. I’ve bought two cars in the last two months from different dealers presumably they just ask for the hell of it? 😄Car_54 said:

If on finance I could understand some interest but otherwise 🤷♀️WellKnownSid said:

Both cash. Dealer one told me it was needed to tax the car. Dealer two told me it wasn’t needed because it came with 24 hours of insurance. I presume there is a consumer duty thing where they cannot click through the notice that the car needs to be insured. Allowing someone off the forecourt in an untaxed uninsured car because you didn’t check sounds to me to be a legal goldmine…GrumpyDil said:
