Forget about holiday companies.  Use google flights explore to search for a one way flight to some destinations from your chosen airport, choose a flight now look for a one way flight back mess around with it to see which dates are cheaper.  Now go to booking.com or similar to find a place to stay.  You have to think about how you get to the accomodation from the airport so make sure its easily accessible my public transport preferably, you should probably think about that before you even book the flight.
  • Yep as above.

Go on flights.Google.com to search for a flight from your local airport to Spain on suitable dates. You can put Spain in as the destination if you want or narrow it down to Costa del sol or whatever.

Then booking.com or airbnb.com will get you accommodation.

Last step is to Google airport transfer options but 99 times out of 100 there will be a bus available from the airport to somewhere near your accommodation unless you've picked something way out in the sticks.

No need to deal with package holidays and your operators.

Up to yourself what you like obviously but I find beach resorts can be a bit dull for solo travelling so you might prefer a city break? On the other hand if you just want to chill for a week by the pool then go for it.

Totally agreed. In some destinations where the transfer from the airport  is longer (e.g Turkey) I've used transfer firms (Hoppa, Sun Transfers etc) but usually there is a public transport alternative.

Anyway, the transfer bus is often one of the worst things about package holidays. Having to wait for other people's flights to arrive and then going on a grand tour of every hotel in the area before yours is inevitably the last one. Travel solo and you are straight out of the airport onto the local bus, train or sometimes a taxi.

You can get good information about public transport from Google Maps. Before paying for accommodation, check that you can get to it from the airport. The good thing about Spain is that many airports have excellent public transport links: the airports at Malaga and Barcelona have railway stations inside them, with direct links to many seaside resort towns.

Most bargain flights to Spain will be on low-cost carriers and for these Skyscanner is the best tool, but always always always book direct with the airline.

As a solo traveller, I only ever booked hotels and flights independently to avoid single occupancy fees in packages.

Packages aren't good for single travellers really as they always add fees for being alone, which you don't get if you book separately.

  • As a frequent solo traveller my approach is Skyscanner to look for flights and I'm happy to pay more to avoid 3am checkin times and just avoid Ryanair on principle, I don't care if the next cheapest is £500 more I'm not giving O'Leary a penny, then google to find where hotels are and what they cost, usually ending up booking direct with the hotel.

I visit cities rather than beaches so in Europe there are usually rail links combined with a metro system for the transfer.

I've done holidays with tour companies as well and there are some that only cater for single travellers (e.g. solos ) so don't charge a single supplement.  Those were for organised group tours though with itineraries, rather than a chill on the beach type holidays.

Looking at the OP's opening enquiry - it may be that a package holiday would meet his wishes ?
I wouldn't dismiss TUI or Jet2 without knowing.
TUI do a few dedicated single room deals - I remember looking at these for a relative some years ago - they were not double rooms at a solo occupancy added on rate. The relevant hotels were actually listed for information.
I had a brief look at Jet2 offers the other day - they too have deals that appear not to be priced as a part occupied double at extra cost for sole use.
Some are clearly listed as single rooms, as well as others as double for single use.
