  • I rang this morning and they couldn't tell me if my test payment had been received. I'm going to go passive on this account, if the necessary reaches me by mail and the account is still open then I'll probably fund, otherwise it can lapse.

Thank you - yes I need to put in another call. After just re-checking the email from them & clicking on the link it does definitely send me to another website for log in. It doesn't match HEBS login page & seems to be a log in for encrypt-eu. I shouldn't need to sign up to someone else's website to read a message from HEBS - very strange - hopefully they can clarify what has occured on Monday

You mentioned seeing Hanley's logo on the site with the third-party URL. Is this recollection correct?

As far as I'm aware, customers of Hanley Economic BS should not be asked to view messages on a third-party platform (especially one that requires separate registration). Their online banking has a dedicated 'message centre' for secure message communication.

I've examined the original/headers of an email I've previously received from the email address you shared earlier (which has now been removed by the forum team, but it's the same email address published on Hanley's official contact page). Emails from thehanley.co.uk may authentically pass through the servers of mailanyone, and I suspect URL rewriting could be occurring (so malicious links can be broken without the link remaining active in the recipient's email inbox), but none of that would explain why you received such an email in the first place.

Did you apply for the regular saver account online? If so, you should only have received automatic email notifications from Hanley's "noreply" email address, not Hanley Economic Savings Services (which they use for their published 'Email Us' address).

Hanley uses the same online banking system as Cambridge BS, but with reduced functionality. With Cambridge, I received my User ID by email and was able to use the password + memorable information I created during the account application process to initially log in, then subsequently change my User ID. This is the process of new customers applying for an account online being automatically registered for online banking, working as expected.

Existing customers not registered for online banking receive a User ID by email and a temporary password by SMS to initially log in, then change their User ID and create a permanent password + memorable information.

With Hanley, new customers applying for an account online should be automatically registered for online banking; like with Cambridge, applicants are required to create a password + memorable information during the application process, but the User ID is sent through the post (instead of email).

Existing customers not registered for online banking receive a User ID by post and a temporary password by email to initially log in, then change their User ID and create a permanent password + memorable information.

    * I applied for a Hanley account online as a new customer. I had not received my User ID after having waited for 10 working days (two weeks), so I called customer service who informed me to manually register for online banking (as an existing customer). From manual registration, it took 4 calendar days to receive the temporary password by email (received on a Saturday), and 9 calendar days to receive the User ID by post. My original permanent password created at the application stage did not work, although my memorable information remained valid and did not need to be re-created.

    • Cambridge implements 2FA on login, with each login prompting a choice between receiving the code via email or SMS. Hanley does not implement 2FA on login.

My curiosity got the better of me last night and, having received my User ID in the post yesterday, I sent a payment to Hanley Reg Saver. I was surprised when the funds were showing in my account by 10:00 this morning. Quite impressed really. Downloaded the app and, while it is quite basic it does the job well enough. Now I have started I think I will continue with the account.

As has been mentioned it is the same app as the one used by Cambridge but also by Saffron Building Society. Yes, it's basic but I find it much better than the one used by most Building Societies which I find rather tortuous. Do prefer the platform used by many banks (and some Building Societies) run by Newcastle Building Society from Newcastle. But that's another story for another thread.

I assume that the month used by HEBS is a calendar month so another deposit could be made on 1 January?
  • @Malchester, yes it’s calendar month so I’ll be making another payment into the account on 1st January. My payment from yesterday was also showing this morning. I’ll keep the account too as it looks like easy access accounts are gradually reducing so 5.5% is pretty good when you can put £1000 in a month, as long as you don’t need to withdraw from it more than five times.

Does anyone know if Hanley pay interest immediately on debit card deposits?

I paid a standing order to them yesterday but for whatever reason, their app only shows it as received (and dated) today.

EDIT: I see their T&C have a 3pm cut off for deposits.

Not sure about debit cards but my faster payment made on 1 Jan has only appeared in the last hour dated today.

That is odd! Are you planning to ask them about the delay?

As well as the standing order, I also made a debit card payment yesterday which appeared to have been credited instantly

I posted here because I was interested to hear from other holders of HEBS accounts if this was their standard timescale for dealing with deposits - I've only had an account since late Dec.

EDIT to quote from their T&Cs

    Electronic Payments into your account:

    .

7.10 The date that payments will be to be credited to your account will be the date that we receive the cleared funds. Cut-off times apply for receipt of an Electronic Payment:

    Payments received by us before 3pm on a Working Day, will be credited to your account and will be available to withdraw immediately, as soon as we receive it;

Payments received after 3pm on a Working Day or on a non-Working Day, will be credited to your account and will be available to withdraw at the start of the next Working Day (subject to our Normal Business Hours).
