Thanks, that's the kind of info I was looking for.

That's a really good link - for example I now know how to copy and paste with the centre mouse button!

But beware - some of the tips only work on certain distros, and it often doesn't say which. The first step of the "Skinny Elephant" system reset procedure definitely does ~not~ work in Ubuntu Gutsy, and instead seems to launch an infinite number of screen shot copies!

Zenwalk Linux (http://www.zenwalk.org/) is my favourite Linux distro. Unlike Ubuntu, SuSE and other "over the top" distros, it's not overloaded with a million applications that you'll never use, but instead has one program for each purpose - i.e. one MP3 player, one web browser, etc. Installing other programs is easy with the built-in package manager.

There are some help files on the Zenwalk website, which might help - even if you're running a different distro: http://manual.zenwalk.org/en/.

There's also a general Linux Newbie Guide here: http://www.faqs.org/docs/lnag/, and O'Reilly have a free book, which might be of some use: http://www.oreilly.com/catalog/linag2/book/index.html (although, to be honest I think it's only free because it hasn't been updated since 2000!)

I'm not a Linux expert by any means, but because of the rather steep learning curve, I have found it imperative to keep notes on everything that I have done - otherwise, despite often spending hours trying to do something supposedly "simple", I'd forget it all before I had to do it again!

If anyone wants to learn Linux but doesnt want to go to the hassle of dual booting etc, Knoppix is a great system where you run the linux operating system without having to install anything, it all runs straight off the CD

Most of the Linux distros are like that now, they are 'Live CDs'.
You can run straight from the cd (sluggishly) with the option to install only if you want to.
