It isn't a feature on all cars.  Mine has speed sign recognition and is only for information.  It is so useless* I make sure I have it switched off.

*partly due to lack of signs and partly due to the fact that it routinely ignores them.

My wife and my father-in-law refuse to use the feature. My son and I love it.
Will you still love it when it misses a sign and you get points for speeding?

Relying on the technology is not a defence.
I agree; the danger is that one becomes reliant upon technology and surrounding circumstances. I would recognise unusual irregularities where a limit of 60 mph is indicated in an apparent low-speed zone. Filthy road signs or those overgrown with weed can be problematic.
I have osteoarthritis in my hands so I speak my messages into a microphone using Dragon. Some people make "typos" but I often make "speakos".

Agree as well. The less a driver has to do, the less they think they have to do, so rather than concentrate they become blasé.

  • Brexit has nothing to do with it, nor does the EU.

The UK is still part of UNECE. European type approval is UNECE-wide.

Not even the hardest of isolationists in our politics are suggesting taking the UK out of the United Nations.

Had this on my previous ford puma, in theory it’s a good idea but, I found that it often failed to recognise signs, sometimes picking out the side road 20mph and slowing to this speed, my new Toyota doesn’t have the limit linked to the speedo and this rarely gets a sign wrong, I think it’s a great idea if it works properly but I’m happier manually adjusting mine as required…
Thank you. That provides a good answer to my original question.

United Nations, has to be the biggest oxymoron in history.

In the old days, ha ha.
Before brexit, the limiter was to reduce speed and would slow you down.
    Not let you speed.
Make a note of how many times you override it etc.
Then probably sell the data to you insurance company and charge you more.
    Conspiracies all around.
After brexit it was fitted but override is possible as you say.

I don't believe Brexit has made any difference, EU/UK vehicles will be made to the same standard?
As with DPFs, our rules and possibly other countries rules allow for their removal. I assume they remap cars in France/Germany?

The only difference is that it was going to be mandatory in eu with no option to turn off, but in UK off switch is an option.

It is mandatory, what you read was just a proposal and media speculation.
