At no point has he given ebay his business name and details. 

That's information easily found on the internet - but a bit concerning that a seller actively looked them up just to harass him about an item.  If he hasn't already, definitely report them!  The line about having to hide a box for customs is bad even by itself - customs fraud is illegal, no seller should be openly admitting to that.  (Nobody should be doing that, of course, but as always just because crime is illegal doesn't stop it happening.)
