Had been using a variety of smokeless coals in my multifuel stove - Each morning, the glass needed a spray of oven cleaner to get rid of the black deposits. Didn't order any coal this year, in part, due to the price, so have been burning just wood. A quick wipe with a dry bit of kitchen roll is all that is required to clean the glass - Doubt if I will go back to using coal from now on.
I switched to wood this year for exactly the same reason and noticed the same thing. It's a lot less effort as well because you don't need to clean the ash out every morning. All that remains to be seen is whether wood can provide enough heat if we get a really cold spell,

That will depend on the size of the stove, and how much fuel you shove on.
I've been burning quite a bit of Cedar lately, most of which are large logs. Receiving complaints that the room is getting too hot.. Last couple of evenings, I've been burning small scraps, feeding a little at a time, and the temperature has not been climbing as high or as fast.

Treasure the moments that you have. Savour them for as long as you can for they will never come back again.
  • Wood or smokeless fuel isn't cheaper than gas unless you get free wood and cheaper than that for ovals. The ones I buy from a local supplier work out at 50p per kilo. I burn about 5 kilos after 4pm topped up with free pallet wood if necessary. So about £20 a week. More if it gets freezing again. That heats 2 rooms - a through room and often have to keep a door open! Much hotter and nicer than central heating. My first year so next year hope to collect pollarded tree wood.
