10Kg bags of smokeless fuel in Aldi for £6.49

Options
This might be old news or well known, but I just picked up three 10Kg bags of smokeless fuel in Aldi this morning for £6.49 a bag.

No idea how it compares to Blaze or Brazier. Most other stores seem to be selling these two for between £7.50 and £7.99 per 10Kg bag.

Thought I would mention it in case anyone needs small bags of smokeless solid fuel.

    Good point.

I guess it would be if we relied on solid fuel, but I only buy it at Xmas time to bulk up the multi-fuel stove and our open fire in the dining room.

If I was dependant on solid fuel, I think I would be buying in bulk from the cheapest supplier based on a pallet load or from the local coal merchant.

£650 a tonne isn't hugely expensive for solud fuel, although you can probably do better if you buy a full tonne from a coal merchant. It's about 9p/kWh.

I bought some last year. It was very poor compared to what I had previously used (Stoveheat)..

We tend to use the homefire ecoal which is made with olive stones. Found it very good and cheapest place for this is the co-op.

If you’re after smokeless then the Defra website will give you the composition of all smokeless fuel and the manufacturer. It’s quite interesting.

Our chimney sweep warned us off the ecoal as he reckons the standard smokeless ovals or similar burned hotter and cleaner. I have to say, so far I’m inclined to agree with him. Less ash than the ecoal too. I like the idea of the ecoal, but it definitely in our fires doesn’t seem to give as much heat.

I’ll bear that in mind, our sweep hasn’t said as much but will try some of the smokeless ovals

Looking at the Defra website, it would seem ecoal has only 5 to 20% biomass (olive stones?) of the total weight, and the rest of the composition is similar to most smokeless coals (anthracite, petroleum coke & bituminous coal), so doesn't sound like its environmentally friendly credentials are that great.

Had been using a variety of smokeless coals in my multifuel stove - Each morning, the glass needed a spray of oven cleaner to get rid of the black deposits. Didn't order any coal this year, in part, due to the price, so have been burning just wood. A quick wipe with a dry bit of kitchen roll is all that is required to clean the glass - Doubt if I will go back to using coal from now on.

Well after using the £6.49 Aldi smokeless fuel in both our multi-fuel stove and open fire, I can't fault it.
It burned well in both leaving hardly any clinker. I will definitely buy more next time I see some in Aldi.
