Received my £10 Christmas bonus today

  • Hubby got his payment today too. He never looks at the (joint) bank account. Shall I tell him or just spend it myself ?

I’ve got to wait another 8 years until I get it. Probably will still be £10 then and enough to buy one second class stamp!

I turn 66 and start getting the state pension tomorrow! All set up and my first actual payment should be on the 22nd.  I looked at the rules about the Xmas bonus and I reckon I should qualify - it says you do if you're receiving the pension in the qualifying week or during the qualifying week which starts today. It doesn't say anything about getting it throughout the week.

However nothing received this morning but I suppose it might be paid later in the week. By any chance does anyone older than me with a birthday around now have any experience of this from past years?
Hi spot ... I don't know but there are some very knowledgeable people over there on the Pensions board ... worth a post if nobody answers here.

Had the WFA last week but there’s no sign of the Christmas bonus. Guess there’ll be no shopping spree for me then, well not today at least

In 1972 when it was introduced, the State Pension was £6.75 for a single person and £10.90 for a couple!  [The equivalents now being £201.05 for a single person and £306.85 for a couple (going by the minimum income level set by Pension Credit).]

OH received Christmas bonus today so just enjoyed a nice steak dinner, looking forward to mentioning while enjoying free sandwiches and sausage rolls during break at quiz night tomorrow night.

    Hi Spot,

I turned 66 on December 3rd and I think my £10 bonus was added to my first pension payment. It was not mentioned in the letter from DWP but the actual payment was exactly £10 more than I was due for the first 9 days pension.

Thanks!  Actually my bonus was paid into my account on Tuesday - three days ahead of my first proper payment which was paid today, as notified back in August when I made my application.

What I think has happened is that as a new entrant to the payment system and having settled the details well in advance, I didn't go live on it until last week, and as soon as that happened the system worked out that I was due the £10 bonus and paid it straight away.

I'm puzzled that someone else was paid in a different way and I'd have thought the payment would always be a separate one marked XB on your bank statement - however what does it matter so long as we got it! My first payment today was for 18 days so perhaps that has something to do with it.

I also applied for my bus pass and have been making good use of it since it arrived last week. :D

Most posters on the thread on the benefits board seem to have got it in with a benefit payment this year instead of a separate payment.

(This after being adamant that the computer system couldn't handle an extra £20 per week for the legacy income-related benefits … !)

I remember wondering what the benefit X - £10 was on my deceased parent's account many years ago.

    I had to google it.

Seemed a bit of a trivial sum for the admin involved - but probably easier to leave running than stop.

It's now a fraction of basic state pensions - compared to 50 years ago.
