I think I am missing something. Previously, it was necessary to check-in online and print the boarding pass or face a fine of 55EUR. Many were unhappy. Now selected passengers get privilege to check-in at the airport for free. Why is this an issue?

    Because they're different people.
Checking in at the airport isn't a "privilege", it's a waste of time for anyone without hold baggage. Much easier to checkin online and head straight to security with a mobile boarding pass.
People who complained about paying a silly amount to check in at the airport are people who either forget to checkin, or who are used to checking in at the airport as that's the traditional way, or people who thought they had to with hold luggage.

Time-wise, it hardly makes any difference. If you are short on time, the most likely scenario is that the airport staff will help you to get to the gate as quickly as possible, via the priority/express queue, for instance. If you arrive with plenty of time to spare, it doesn't matter much where to wait.

Checkin queues can be long - I've had to wait 30 mins+ at some airports.
Don't think it'd put me off though, it's one of those things with Ryanair. I'm not that bothered about getting premium seats so I probably won't checkin late as I usually do.
