Hi we are due to be moved over from ESA support group to UC in the new year and i have tried a few online  calculators  but i find it quite confusing . On my summery it states that because i am a carer the £332.58 I get as a carer will be taken off our award  as income /savings but  there is a carer premium of £179.00 on the award? My  question is do i get my Carers allowance still paid to me as i do now separte from other benefits as well as the £179.00 premium or is the premium instead of my carers allowance which is higher than the premium I'm being offered  ? any help would be apricated as it just don't make sense to me

  • What benefits do you currently claim?  You mention ESA and Carers Allowance, what else?
(If it's just those then you wouldn't be having to migrate to UC for a few years yet.)

Carers allowance is paid separately to UC but then deducted in full from your total UC but you also receive a carers element as part of your UC claim. The person in support group of ESA will get the LCWRA elmeent of Uc added to the claim also.
  • HI thank you for your response.  my husband gets ESA (support group) and DLA high  rate mobility and middle rate care my son who has turned 19 but still at collage we  get child tax credit for but that stops the week before his 20th birthday (February2024) my son also gets pip enhanced both he is who i get carers allowance for .
  • Okay so your UC award will include:

    Standard allowance (couple)  £578.82
LCWRA (the ESA Support Group equivalent)  £390.06
    Carers element  £185.86
    Rent? if applicable

You'll have any remaining ESA deducted, if there's a contributions-based element to it - £561.17
    Carers Allowance deducted - £332.58

I don't know if transitional protection will apply here, depending on whether it will be a change of circumstances (due to your son coming off your CTC claim in Feb 24), or if this is mandated migration before that happens.  I'm not conversant with the rules around qualifying young people on UC either way.

Was there a thread the other day about migrations being deferred if claiments had a child aged 19 and currently in non-advanced education, so they don't get transferred until the child's 20th birthday instead?

I'm admit I am still a little confused by all these MMs, so apologies if I've got it all wrong. It's such a minefield.

Have you actually had a Managed Migration notice from the DWP/HMRC saying that you have to migrate to UC?
You don't say anywhere that you have had such a notice.
You only say only that "we are due to be moved" without saying why you think that.

    Thanks, that's very helpful.
That letter is NOT a Managed Migration Notice.
A letter, in February, "Inviting" you to claim UC because your Tax Credits are ending anyway is a whole different thing to a migration notice saying that you "Have" to move to UC.
It is going to be your choice.
The Tax Credits are going to end anyway, but that is only because of your sons birthday, - it's then going to be your choice whether you want to claim UC at that time or not.
So it is now a case of working out if you will be better staying as you are now with ESA, etc. or if you might get more money if you choose to move to UC.
Spoonie is already helping you to work that out.
Yes it is confusing, stick with us and we'll do our best to explain what will be the best for you to do.

DLA is separate so that will continue as it is.

Is your rent social rent, or private?  Do you currently claim Housing Benefit?

You will get the UC amounts, but your Carers Allowance will be deducted in full from it.

[Btw there are no premiums for UC, only elements.  So you'd get the carer element.]

So if the ESA is all income-related and completely stops, you would get
    UC of (578.82+390.06+185+Rent)-332.58=£821.30+Rent
Plus Carers Allowance at your normal rate, the £332.58 is from converting the weekly £76.75 into a monthly amount ( x52 ÷12)
