I think I'll invest in a new 256GB SanDisk drtve, but the tv didn't ask for formatting. Is this possibly because the tv saw there wa salready files on it?

DO NOT BUY a USB drive. You'll break it in a fairly short time.
All the TV makers recommend using a spinny disk hard disk drive (a modern SSD hard drive is an alternative).
Give exact model of TV for people to double check what is needed / it can do?0 -

Give exact model of TV for people to double check what is needed / it can do?That's interesting, I've just been reading 2 articles on Google which are suggesting the drives are ok.However, on reading the manual, it says that drives must be formatted to FAT32. The one I'm using is "exfat". Is that why the drive isn't being seen by the tv?David.0 -

But like I said earlier usb sticks are generally not quick enough to record on
You would be far better off investing in an ssd or specific video spinny hard drive
What does the instructions say you need rather than Google?0 -

USB port might not be fit to run SSD will likely need a power source HDD
Some USB ports only support uploads to tv
