I've now tried another USB stick, and it says "read only"  Re whether it's been formatted, I save stuff to it and use it to transfer stuff between computers all the time/
    What formatting though?

    What d'you mean?
Did you format it on the tv? Beware it will write over anything, and you won’t be able to watch the content on your pc or your other tv

I think I'll invest in a new 256GB SanDisk drtve, but the tv didn't ask for formatting. Is this possibly because the tv saw there wa salready files on it?
Does the manual say your tv can record.

Well it's a SMART tv with Freeview Play
That does not answer the question

DO NOT BUY a USB drive.  You'll break it in a fairly short time.

All the TV makers recommend using a spinny disk hard disk drive (a modern SSD hard drive is an alternative).

Give exact model of TV for people to double check what is needed / it can do?

That's interesting, I've just been reading 2 articles on Google which are suggesting the drives are ok.

However, on reading the manual, it says that drives must be formatted to FAT32.  The one I'm using is "exfat".  Is that why the drive isn't being seen by the tv?

Probably try formatting it to fat32 and see what happens

But like I said earlier usb sticks are generally not quick enough to record on

You would be far better off investing in an ssd or specific video spinny hard drive

What does the instructions say you need rather than Google?

    Is it USB3 or USB2 ?
USB port might not be fit to run SSD will likely need a power source HDD
Some USB ports only support uploads to tv
