USB not recognised

Options
On my Sharp SMART tv, I need to insert a USB device to record, but it says it's not recognised. I can't even pause the tv!
Am I doing something wrong or have I missed a setting somewhere?

I've just bought a new Toshiba SMART tv, and I'm getting a slightly different message on it, though it's basically saying the same.

TIA
David.

  • Is the USB device formatted?
  • I've now tried another USB stick, and it says "read only"  Re whether it's been formatted, I save stuff to it and use it to transfer stuff between computers all the time/

USB sticks for recording programmes in TVs are not recommended due to limited read/write cycles --- but all will require the TV to re-format them to the TV's proprietary file system before use.  They also need to be multi-Gigabyte size usually.  See the (e)Manuals and TV Menu system for how to do that...  NB the process will erase all data on the stick.

Likely if there are files on the stick it is saying those are unsupported for playback in the TV media player, and doesn't offer to format for TV recording, possibly, because of those files?

As above , normally tvs won't accept a usb stick to record on (I assume that's what you are trying) as they are simply not quick enough hence why yours says read only as read speeds are generally quicker than write speeds

Have you tried an external ssd following the manufacturers instructions?

My tv/surround system only likes the file system fat32 for example for anything over 64gb so you need to check what Toshiba uses

Did you format it on the tv? Beware it will write over anything, and you won’t be able to watch the content on your pc or your other tv

I think I'll invest in a new 256GB SanDisk drtve, but the tv didn't ask for formatting. Is this possibly because the tv saw there wa salready files on it?

Does the manual say your tv can record.
