DAB+

I wonder if anyone out there is having problems with DAB+ as I am?

Bought a PURE radio some years back with a specification that clearly says it's DAB+. However now that some of my favourite stations are moving to DAB+ I find it doesn't work with these. Contacting the manufacturers I am told its not upgradeable.

I am not going to accept this but I wonder if others have had similar problems.

It concerns me that landfill is where lots of these are going to end up and I really find the attitude of the makers odd because we all know that these devices are made for multiple markets and variations are dealt with by different power supplies (for the mains voltage) and software for different operating modes and frequencies. However Pure are telling me that the model I have alhough it has a software upgrade function and socket was made uniquely for the UK.

Are you sure you have a DAB+ radio?

Just checked mine (and I nearly scalded myself as it is steam driven) and it isn't capable of being upgraded but since I won't be listening to Classic FM it won't bother me.  Does seem a pointless exercise though when Digital Radio UK said:-
DAB+ is more spectrum efficient than DAB, therefore enabling more radio stations to be broadcast within the same amount of capacity.
and if, as the BBC said, it would continue to broadcast DAB alongside DAB+ where is the saving?
  • Isn’t more to do with the area you are in?  Where I live in South Devon, there are only limited stations available on DAB plus, no BBC radio stations at all.
    Check your postcode: https://getdigitalradio.com/post-code-checker/
  • Thanks everyone.

It's a Pure Chronos CD Series 2.  Cost around £100 to £125 I seem to recall. It has an upgrade port. And the booklet clearly says it's DAB+. However Classic FM is about to go DAB+, Scala has gone DAB+, Greatest Hits is next and there are others already DAB+.

For the person saying is it my area, no, because another DAB radio which is DAB+ does receive these "missing" stations.

Pure are implying that the UK one is made for the UK market only and the instruction manual is for the UK and international markets. Quite frankly this doesn't ring true to me. In this day and age equipment is made for all markets and just software programmed.

I'd post a copy of the page in the manual if I could.

    Thanks everyone.

I would be surprised if it didn't support DAB+ but this is Pure we are talking about.

DAB+ is 16 years old and the first UK stations started in 2016 (we were late to the game) so I'd be very surprised if a radio released in 2017 didn't support DAB+. I say this for three reasons:

It's a UK/EU model and elsewhere started broadcasting DAB+ much earlier.
It's unlikely the Pure could source a chip set that didn't do DAB+.
Even for Pure, it would be odd to launch a radio in 2017 that couldn't pick up stations which had already been broadcasting for over a year.

  • The radio as advertised on the PURE website says DAB+. Look it up under discontinued products under support. Sorry I would send you the link but because I am new the forum wont permit me to include links.

Not sure where you got 2017 from.
Its ten years old (ish) but was bought because it said DAB+.
  • Note on the first line.DAB+

  • From PUREs own website.
