I did question their wisdom a few years ago when HSBC basically forced a digital secure key onto all app users. Previously with a physical secure key you could still use online banking when the app was down. Now it's app/digital or online/physical.
The digital version can work without data (just like the physical version) so unsure that your point has any merit.

The system has never been the same since they split and made HSBC UK. The app
changed and the new one had less features. I was overseas recently and attempted to use an HSBC branch, it was no use other than withdrawing like a generic atm.
the  HSBC UK app  has increased functionality IMO  compared to the old HSBC app
    What does IMO mean?

I don’t know about now, it was many years ago, but it certainly didn’t when it was first released.
the Original HSBC  apps were quite poor,  didn;t have cheque  paying  in by image facility, still doesn;t have 'code for  cash from an atm without a card' but can do a lot of  things via the app or from webpages launched by the app.
Code for cash isn't industry wide plus isn't a LINK service so would only be possible at HSBC ATMs.
