I must come back to you Dolce Vita, whats wrong with someone using ,an opportunity to get on and earn money, what would you do give the house back to the council and move in to nans house?--SO the council can then give to some third world family, who have never paid anything into the system,a nice home [which probably would be rejected because it was to small] . You seem very jealous of anyone wanting to get on.? merry yuletide.jim

Well, ignoring the xenophobia for now, I will tell you that I do indeed have an opportunity to buy a council house cheaply. It belongs to my great auntie and she has suggested I do the very thing you are proposing.

My answer was, and still is, no.
Because regardless of the chance to increase my property "portfolio" :o and make a decent profit, I also have a chance to stand by my princilples.

Saying that buying your own council house depletes the social housing stock is as ridiculous as saying that increasing the stock of private housing by one reduces HPI by increasing the stock available to FTBs.

But mine wasn't part funded by taxpayers and I have never deprived someone of a home they could not otherwise afford.

If you can afford to buy a house, then go and buy one on the open market like most people have to.

And if you can't, you can't.

Join the thousands of others who can't afford to buy because of the ridiculously high prices.

But thats that word OPPORTUNITY and thousands who have bought will vouch for that. But it seems you are happy to house someone,in council accommadation who have never contributed to the system ? And whilst i agree with you regarding the huge prices property demands, going the way i have gone i have managed to help both my children on to the private property ladder, without offending the taxpayer.jim

How do you know this house was not destined for a working young couple with children, currently living in B&B, and born in this country?

I dont ,but chances are it will go to someone who does'nt fit that criteria,i worked for a local authority [Camden in london]so i saw exactly what actually happens, not to say a deserving uk couple might be lucky, but thats a very small percentage the way entilement points stack up.

    Merry Xmas all.

Just to add to this. My husband and I along with our children - and yes, both of us are UK Taxpayers - are about to be evicted from our long term rent as LL is selling. House prices are such that we cannot afford to buy or rent in this area, also there is nothing available as all the BTL seem to be selling up now. My child has a form of autism and has a teaching assistant so we need to stay in the local area - and yes, if he did not have this then we would move elsewhere, Teaching Assistants are hard to come by at the best of times!! So, having been on the list for a many number of years we went to them and now we are 'somewhere' on the list. If nothing comes up by the time we are evicted then we will be living in a one room hostel. I don't mind this and am prepared for this because beggars can't be choosers (as they say!!) and we have nothing else.

However, I wanted to say, please do not assume that all the council places go to people from 'third world countries who have paid nothing in for their entire lives'. Because we have - and we pay council tax on the property where we are living now, and have done since the CT was bought in. We have no other options. Should we ever be in the position to buy (roll on the price crash, LOL) then we will, however, right now we need the help to get somewhere to live and have turned to the local authority to help us now, the thing is we can't get anything right now as there are no houses available. Why is this..... oh yes, hold on......

I felt quite annoyed reading your post as, if you all have a house coming to you shortly then why not go live there, it is paid for and your parents will leave it to you and you get the house 'when they go' (god forbid) and you clearly have no need for this house other to sell it on and make money. Do you think it is fair that you take a house that someone else, a family like us for example, might need? Or is council accomodation only seen for the jobless and immigrants these days that clearly don't deserve it?

Years ago your parents were given this opportunity of having somewhere to live until they needed it and you were bought up in this house I assume. Yes, sure the RTB scheme exists but instead of abusing it to make money, you clearly have no need for it now so why not say to the council 'thank you for helping us for all these years when we had no other options of getting somewhere to live but now we don't need it, maybe you can find someone else who actually does' and you go off to the house that you have been left?
