Advice On Buying a Council House

  • No idea.

    Ok here's the dealio -

They are entitled to have 26K knocked off i think.

They charge me no rent and they have benefits coming in.

I will be the person paying so if they want to pose as people who are taking rent of me, then fine.

My gran passed away and we are expected to move into her house.

It would be silly for them to miss out on an opportunity with this house. If they go for it under the right to buy scheme then they cannot sell/rent for min of 3 years.

Im hoping to sell it in 3 years anyways.

Now do i need to go to a broker or someone?

I have no idea on how to buy a council property in the correct way. I was told that its not exactly like buying a non-council property. There are people i can use and approach.

    So what do you suggest>?

Surely if another home has become freely available, they should no longer be entitled to social housing and this property could provide shelter for someone in need, rather than seemingly a profit to yourself? I don't like to judge, but this all sounds morally bankrupt. Or maybe I don't understand the system?

    Gosh. You are so clever.

Building such an empire from scratch.

I wish all my family had lived in council houses. I could have bought all my properties for half what I paid.

But like they say, you can't choose your family.
You can't choose your neighbours either!

    BINGO.

At last we arrive at the real motive.

(Just as I suggested in post #2)
    dolce vita's stock reply templates

#1. The people that run these "sell your house and rent back" companies are generally lying thieves and are best avoided

#2. This time next year house prices in general will be lower than they are now

#3. Cheap houses are a good thing not a bad thing

Where do they live in 3 years then? They won't get another council house if they had RTB. Plus they'll make money on the sale which will then be taken out of their HI allowance (money from house sale can be taken into account with benefits - I've seen it happen to my OH's ex). Be very careful that you profitting will not put them in a difficult position.

With regards to saying you're paying them rent, that would need to be declared to benefits office so going down that route could result in an investigation. Also if you are earning I'm not 100% sure but they might need to declare your income anyway - you're living rent free.

To me this sound a lot more complicated than simply buying a council house - there could be some serious implications with regards to benefit fraud if you start declaring certain things. I would investigate what you should and shouldn't do in terms of claiming before doing anything - you don't want to put your parents in a worse position.

Be careful someone I know has had a lot of grief from the Benefits people recently as her son turned 18, was working but on a low wage...they said she MUST charge him keep plus it will be deducted from her benefits.

If you work full time, live at home rent free the benefits agency would expect you to pay "keep" and this would come off your parents benefits.

If your parents are about to get a free house why not return the council place so that a family in need could benefit from subsidised accomodation??

We returned ours years back when we bought a place and have been glowing in the good karma ever since ...................................................

  • Sho me da money - you have a PM
  • I must come back to you Dolce Vita, whats wrong with someone using ,an opportunity to get on and earn money, what would you do give the house back to the council and move in to nans house?--SO the council can then give to some third world family, who have never paid anything into the system,a nice home [which probably would be rejected because it was to small] . You seem very jealous of anyone wanting to get on.? merry yuletide.jim

You're confusing jealousy with pride. Greedy blinkered types often get these two mixed up.

This is a money saving site!

If you don't like the politics that allow people to buy their home, then go and campaign for a change.

Taking the moral high ground to hide your jealousy doesn't fool anyone.

Its ironic that tenants are reminded [on here] that it is their home not an evil landlord's. The minute that landlord happens to be a HA or council and someone wants to buy their own home, suddenly its wrong and unethical.

No reason to be jealous here I'm afraid. Point all you want.

There's nothing ironic about it. Private landlords generally provide for those who are self-sufficient. HA and council properties are targeted towards those who are struggling to provide shelter for themselves. Damn right I'll take a high-ground, this whole scheme is morally corrupt.
