I save loads, all year, on Agile, by avoiding the peaks. I just regard the saving sessions as a bit of fun and a nod to being public spirited.

My fridge and freezer are now permanently on a timer, so go off for both the morning and evening peaks. Doesn't help my Octopoint score, but I'm making an ongoing saving that should more than make up for it.

I rather enjoy switching nearly everything off and sitting in the firelight for an hour or so.
How long do you leave them off each day for?
    Lancashire
    PV 5.04kWp SW facing
    Solar Battery 6.5 kWh
    🐙 Intelligent Go

Mortgage freedom January 2024 - paid off 7 years early by making overpayments where we could.

    Really?
You do realise that fridges and freezers are effectively on timers already?

If I was half as smart as I think I am - I'd be twice as smart as I REALLY am.

Sounds dangerous, foodwise. That's long enough for some foods to grow bacteria and doing it over and over makes it even more likely.

Do you open the doors during those times or not?  Would be better to have a session overnight when you're asleep.

From a food point of view, it's not something I'd do, but each to their own.  But from the savings sessions point of view, you're lowering your baseline load at the point you want to be increasing or at least maintaining it, so if you want to carry on doing it, I'd suggest you pick a different timeslot to the 16-19 one, and change it on session days.

Only if you leave the door open long enough for the inside to warm up, or put warm food in to raise the temperature inside.

All official info I could find says food inside a fridge is good for 4 hours if you keep it closed.  24-48 hours in a freezer (half-full / full).

If the fridge isn't warming up in three hours then it won't come on in normal use so no point in turning the power off. If it does warm up and the fridge normally cycles during three hours then it's not good for some foods. Some will be fine, some will not. Surely the idea of a fridge is to keep the contents at a constant temperature.

Wow I would be scared to do that but good on you!

Why, the internal temperature hardly varies.

You do realise that fridges and freezers are effectively on timers already?

They are controlled by thermostats. The only way to override that is to switch the power off.

That's long enough for some foods to grow bacteria and doing it over and over makes it even more likely.

The freezer is set at -20 degrees. The warmest setting is -18 degrees. It doesn't even get to -19 degrees in that time. Similarly, the internal temperature of the fridge barely varies.

But from the savings sessions point of view,

I'm doing it from an Agile point of view. Those two periods are the most expensive. Being an idle pensioner I'm still in bed during the morning peak and I don't cook during the evening peak, so rarely need to open either appliance.

All official info I could find says food inside a fridge is good for 4 hours if you keep it closed.  24-48 hours in a freezer (half-full / full).

I do keep both appliances fairly full, so lots of coolth stored in them.
