If anyone can understand OFGEM’s raison d’être read this published today https://www.ofgem.gov.uk/sites/default/files/2024-11/DecisionLetter_DFS_Article18.pdf

Edited: and if you can understand it please translate 🙀
It's a lengthy discussion of the consultation, which followed publication of the proposed changes to the scheme released and discussed here a few weeks ago. They are rubber-stamping these proposals, despite several concerns being raised about the changes.
The TL;DR of the proposals if I remember correctly was that they didn't foresee any great need this winter, events would be very limited, there would be no advanced notice, and overall the scheme looked a lot less lucrative than previous years. Octopus seems to have done the maths and come up with their 90% reduction, although I don't know what they have based that on.
Yeah that bothered me , where did they pluck 22p from , of course that is 10% of their “average”  payout of 2.25. But of course there is no correlation with what I can find, but NESO is now Government run so wouldn’t surprise me that will help with the “22 billion black hole” , and of course the c10% of smart meters that don’t “work” can’t help with that.
Talking of percentages 90% of people will see me as a cynic, 10% well.. and the other 110% won’t have an opinion unless the are given one by Faceache/Xtwit/TruthSocial/Daily Fail 😈

I would be willing to compose an email, but I really have nothing to go on other than that figure, and I don't know how it was arrived at. I also have no data with which to argue a different figure is more appropriate. Simply stating I will not participate at a payout of 22p/kWh is probably the desired outcome for NESO, since they don't believe they will need to call on the service for a live event.

Just got this back from ofgrm

    Thank you for contacting Ofgem.

On 21 November 2024, we approved proposals by the National Energy System Operator (NESO) to operate Demand Flexibility Service (DFS) as a year-round service. NESO operate the DFS by procuring participation from suppliers and electricity aggregators. The service helps balance supply and demand on the electricity grid efficiently and economically by encouraging flexible energy use by consumers.

As a consumer, as long as you have a working smart meter, you should now be able to sign up for the service with your supplier or third-party aggregator if they are offering the service. NESO will be able to provide you with additional information on the service.

We’ll be working closely with NESO, consumers, the energy sector and Government, to understand the lessons the DFS teaches us about flexible energy use and how both consumers and our electricity grid can benefit from it now and in the longer term.

    Kind regards

    Francis

Just had an email from Octopus about this:

    "

We think Saving Sessions has been a massive success: saving a small gas-powered station’s worth of power each time the grid needed it, ..."

I wouldn't call one small station a massive success.

I take it that doesn't address the points you raised.

We'll find out when we see how much cash is on offer and if it's really only 10% of what we've previously enjoyed.

As uploading is not actually saving, in the true sense of the word.
Assuming by "upload" you mean "export" then it has exactly the same benefit to the grid.
  • Looks like Octopus have put a bid against todays 9/12 dfs …. let’s see if they are accepted , 6x500 MW
