MortgageMamma wrote:I have two mini schnauzers, and, because they don't moult like other dogs its important to keep them healthy as they are prone to skin conditions
when i bought them my vet said to feed them chappie, its one of the cheapest dog foods around and isn't full of artificial additives, and also give them boiled rice with it which we do (works out much cheaper than mixer biscuits if you buy in bulk). He also said to give them a 400g of sardines in oil once a week, as it stops them getting constipated and the fish oil is really good for them.
As a special treat, we strip the fat from our sunday roast , cut it into small strips and grill it until its all crispy - this will last the week usually, but occassionally we boil them some liver and cut it into cubes - all very very cheap.
Shame the M & S pet insurance premiums increased though!0 -

Please be mindful that some of the cheaper dog foods are high in colouring and the same as you wouldn't feed your kids high coloured sweets don't feed your dogs them either. I work for a dog rescue and the food we buy is about £10 for 15kg but it is natural and gluten free, the first thing the behavourist that we use asks clients is what food is your dog on as this can effect them an awful lot. Go to your pet store and look at things like Burns and James Wellbeloved then go to your local agricultrual store and you will find almost the same ingredients without the label at half the price.
I use Autarky for mine it's about £15-18 for 15kg and full of natural herbs etc.0 -

Wilkinson is great for most pet supplies and is soooooooo much cheaper than pets at home! I buy all my Guinea Pig stuff from there and have not yet found sawdust cheaper anywhere else.
I have also just recently got two kittens and Wilkos is great for all the gear they need and again is much cheaper than the pet super stores for litter, food, litter trays, beds, toys etc.
One more thing, in ASDA at the moment they have Whiskas pouches on offer £2 for a box of twelve (saving over £1 compared to Wilkos and Pets at Home!0 -
my cat's favourite toy is our birds in the cage
she never chases the birds outside in fact blackbirds get the pleasure of being able to pinch her biscuit while she looks on approvingly!!!! however, whe she is inside she is fanscinated by the birds
in turn the birds are fascinated by the marie fish which can i say if anyone has any tips about feeding marie fish please let me know as they cost a fortune
someone once said they like cooked cabbage but trust me ours don't!!!Well we finally did it got a house not on a main road, next a railway line or any other werid and wonderful things that get on my nerves!!!

Like one or two others on here, we feed our two dogs (a 12 yo Bearded Collie Cross & 1.5 yo miniature Schnauzer) on beef mince.
Its really cheap, far better for the dogs and actually contains MEAT. Next time you're in the supermarket getting your dog food, stop and have a look at the actual MEAT content in dogfood... Theres normally around 13-15% at the most. Then have a look at the moisture content.
We just buy the bargain basement Beef Mince which if you buy the 800g carton last about 3 days. It costs 1.39 GBP which works out at around 23p per meal. Mix it with some decent Dr Johns Complete Food (6.95 for 3 kg) and your dogs are eating really well for a really good price.
We just serve the mince raw, which they both enjoy. They've been on it now for about 6 months and there have been no bad side effects. Infact, the old beardie is healthier than he has been for years!

Our cat (half Burmese - half tom) goes crazy for tin foil balls, as well as the previously mentioned toilet roll tubes and corks - infact we have never bought him any "toys" - although his "grandparents" do spoil him occasionally.
One interesting moneysaver is that our local RSPCA centre do free neutering and spaying for cats. Definately worth a phone call to see if your local centre offers the same service?[strike]£1,000 Bank Overdraft[/strike] - Repaid!
