Ir recently struck me that staying loyal to a broadband provider is expensive. You start at a (comparitively) low rate and each year they hike it by inflation plus. By switching you reset to a lower figure which then increases by inflation plus. That means the loyal customer has his price increased on the previous years increase which is more than the one who switches. Just why do the broadband providers wnat you to switch around every time your contract ends? Is there some mystic reason or is it simply a bad business model. I shall switch my provider next time as it will save me money. I don't want to, but it will save quite a bit.

  • Hi,
if you phone them you can sometimes get a reduction, maybe go for 18 months instead of 12.

You don't need to switch when your minimum contract period expires. You re-negotiate with the supplier (usually they send you an offer, but that can often be bettered).

You only need switch if there is a better deal elsewhere than they will offer.
  • I have been trying to access the Sky broadband deal posted yesterday on the weekly email but the link to Sky quotes  ‘technical difficulties’.
Sky won’t talk to me as it is via a third party (MSE).
    Any thoughts/ideas?

Its a good business model for them its the same for insurance and other renewing contracts they rely on inertia on the part of the contract holder i.e. they won't bother to look around for better deals because they don't know better or they're simply not tech savvy someone said recently their mother in law is paying £63 monthly for BT broadband she barely uses

Blessed are the geeks, for they shall inherit the Internet.
  • The cost of my broadband has only changed twice in the 20 years I've been with the supplier, and on both occasions it was when I changed the service (2Mbit ADSL to 8Mbit, then ADSL to VDSL FTTC).

The company I'm with don't do introductory discounts or haggle on the phone though, the price you pay is the price they publish on their website.

In September 2012 my charges for TalkTalk Line rental and Fibre Optic Boost 40Meg were £24.50pm. In September 2023 the service now known as Fibre 35 is £29pm. I can't see how anyone could say that I am being exploited. After 11 years I am paying £4.50pm more.

Sorry, I do not believe in begging these companies. Either they offer me the same rate as everybody else, or I walk.

They want to attract new customers when they move into a property, but are too lazy to switch at the end of the term.
An added benefit are the people who might switch once and feel the hassle isn't worth it a second time.

I made money out of having broadband during the golden age when they still allowed you to leave when there had been any increases, I left multiple companies after receiving cash back and never paid them more than the cash back I had received.

The alternative is that everyone will pay the full price, not just the lazy people.

You'll do a lot of walking, then.
(It's what I do; each time my contract's up, I look for where I can switch.)

  • Hi, I’m new to this site so I don’t know if I’m posting in the right place but would appreciate some help if possible.
we’ve had sky tv, phone, landline and broadband for years but recently moved to a retirement flat. We can no longer have broadband or a landline because we don’t have fibre to the flat, it stops six feet from the main front door and the management company will not allow external wires to be installed to our flat, we are first floor.
no one will connect to copper so until 2025 when something will have to be done, we are stuck.
my son uses Three mobile home hub and referred us to them. Not ideal, but a solution, we’ve been using them for six weeks now, since our move, it’s slow and drops frequently but we’ve no choice. Three offered a reward for referral, I’ve just received an email asking me to claim my £20 from a company called Aklamio. This all sounds very strange, is this a scam. I can’t access my three account as it keep asking for my three phone number, we kept our sky mobiles so don’t have a three phone number only the mobile hub.
im very confused, can any one help please.
