Just checked and it's not registered, so do I register via same gov.uk website?

Unless the house is very new, I would use a solicitor to do the registration.  You don't want to create problems for the next sale if you get something wrong now.

House is over 40 years old, mortgage fully paid off several years ago. I will be moving in there sometime in future, so house will not be sold for years and years!
So others have said to amend deeds into my name via land registry website, but your recommendation is via solicitor.

As a first registration, it would be best if you instruct a solicitor.  It can be quite daunting to deal with all the paperwork if you're not too sure of the process.

It is something that is very important to get exactly right, and can be complicated.  Some people can manage to do it themselves, but for many people paying an expert is well worth while.  Rather like building a new bathroom or something.  Have a look at the form - does it look all clear, obvious and easy to deal with for you?  Personally I would not DIY it.
But a banker, engaged at enormous expense,

If the land was already registered then changing it into your own name would be a simple matter of completing the right forms. But for a first registration it can be much more complicated, and it's not something you want to get wrong.

That was before they knew it was a first registration.

Okay thanks, would you recommend that I do this myself or as others have advised to use a solicitor?
