Money Moral Dilemma: I'm a rail worker – should I report my friend for dodging fares?
There is only one case where you would be obliged to report it, and that is IF it is specifically mentioned in your T & C of employment or T.U. rules that you are obliged to report any known suspected cases of fare evasion to your employer, Train Company or Manager, otherwise the onus is SOLELY on your friend to pay the correct fare for every journey he undertakes – fare evasion is a criminal offence under s.5 of the Regulation Of Railways Act, 1889, unless :–
a) A Railway Staff member has given your friend permission to travel ;
b) A train operator authorises free travel (e.g. to cover travel disruption or engineering work) ;
c) Your friend already holds a "Season", "Rover" or or other type of unlimited travel ticket, or can prove he is entitled to travel free by virtue of his employment, etc!
Otherwise, a simple friendly warning in his ear that there could be serious consequences if he's caught at it is about all you can do!
