Money Moral Dilemma: I'm a rail worker – should I report my friend for dodging fares?

The fatcats who run the train companies are sitting with billions in their bank accounts, he is stealing from their profits, so who cares? It doesn't come out of your wages! It's up to them to pay more money for better security! And taxpayers dont pay any more money for a few fare dodgers! The fatcats will put prices up every year no matter whst to make more money!2

And it's admirable to not use those opportunities either.
If there's nothing you're getting out of it then you're just a terrible person and a worse friend.8 -
Birds of a feather.2

Nothing to do with you, it's up to the fare dodger staff to catch him out.

This is why the country is in the appalling state it is- no way should you keep quiet about this. He told you, obviously thinking you might find it funny (get one over on the big companies etc)- but it’s the average, ordinary and TRUSTWORTHY, DECENT human that is being shafted as their fares are always increasing, whilst he is still dodging what he should pay. That is theft and fraud. Does he feel the same way about not paying car insurance and tax knowing that if he kills someone or injuries them badly then that’s OK as he will just get a few points on a (probably non existent licence) and some community payback?!!!Has he tapped into next door’s water, gas and electricity so he doesn’t have to pay that? Does he have some amazingly “clever”
way out of paying council tax?
The UK is on its knees due to those horrible people that think it’s ok to not pay what other (usually less rich) people have to fork out for daily. It’s disgusting and instead of bragging about it then he should be made to pay back all the dodged fares plus a fine and banned from rail travel. Let’s see if he thinks it’s a good idea then.Oh hang on…. no, he is right. Nobody will report him as he is a “friend” and we don’t “grass” on friends, plus nothing will happen regarding consequences anyway so yeah….. let’s all stop paying our bills. Happy days???😡😡😡😡6 -
As others have rightly commented, this is fraud, like it or not. If you're not prepared to "grass", you've no right to complain when you are adversely affected by someone else's fraudulent activities.6

I cannot believe that there are so many commenting on here that a) his friend's actions are acceptable and b) that they consider the person who works in the rail industry is a grass. His friend's actions are criminal in nature and I should remind all posters that this is not a victimless crime so, if they also travel by train, don't bleat about why fares are so high because you, in part, are paying for that criminal activity. Gee, I suppose next you'll be saying that it is O.K. to shoplift, but then you would be hypocritical to complain about prices going up in the shops, and with that goes the assumption that, say, local/convenience stores near you cannot absorb the losses through theft so close and you'd then bleat about that. His cheating friend should be told that his actions are unacceptable and he needs to changes his ways or 'the grass', as some of you disdainfully call him, will no longer consider him a friend.6

I wouldn't grass but rather have a word with him if it's really bothering you and explain why.4

for someone who uses the trains a lot i can't blame him as i got standard in Dover & Manchester due to the train strikes after already paid for the trains so i had to pay another £150 in dover & £70 for a taxi home from Manchester & I've still not for my train fare money back from Dover as they say i've used them even so my advanced trains i booked was on strike so had to use them 2 days later which wasn't the trains i paid for so i should have been refunded on them1

Speak to him first about his behaviour before you do anything; is he struggling with money at the moment (as most of us are) or can he afford it but just doesn't want to pay? If you worked in any other industry and had a "friend" who was robbing your company you would report this to the company but as I said if they're a friend speak to them first3
