Broadband and mobile connectivity

We’re with Sky and their broadband area checker suggests we should be ok for 4G, even 5G, at home. My iPhone 7, partners old Motorola and the iPad suggest otherwise, regularly losing internet connection and most of the time we’re only being able to receive incoming calls via WhatsApp; the issue with the calls is a particular pain since obviously doctors, hairdressers don’t call via WhatsApp. It simply appears as a missed call.
I have spoken to Sky, they reckon we should be ok for full connectivity and yet when I go into wi-fi settings I’ll get a list of networks available before ours appears. Am assuming these are the neighbours networks, interestingly several of which are Sky.
Would upgrading the mobiles help? Partner needs to replace hers any way as her screens broken and it’s pretty old. Looking at refurbed iPhone 11s as I believe they run a later software and fit our present budget. Seems a pointless exercise upgrading if the problems going to persist.
Thank you.

If they are old then they may not b able to use the 5G network.
  • Do Sky now provide broadband over 4G/5G?

@baser999 you seem to be very confused between mobile and broadband issues.

A BROADBAND checker will not show 4G or 5G mobile coverage.

With phones over about 2 years of age it is unlikely they are capable of connecting to the 5G mobile network.

WiFi settings have absolutely NOTHING to do with 4G or 5G MOBILE reception.

If you are getting disconnected from your home WiFi (2.4 or 5 GHz bands) then you may be suffering from interference from neighbours or out of range due to thick walls in your home.

If you have a modern phone and a half decent mobile and broadband suppliers then when you are at home your phone should switch to calls over wifi which mean you will not be using the mobile network, so it will make no difference how good or bad it is.

Who are you mobile phone network providers? Are those devices you mentioned all on the same provider, and is that Sky Mobile?

Who is your broadband provider? Is that also Sky Broadband?

Do you mean that the mobiles are regularly disconnecting from your home broadband or the cellular connection (4G/5G)?
  • Is the iPad you mention a cellular version or wifi only?

Do you have wifi calling enabled on your phones?

@baser999 WiFi calling means that you can use you mobile calling plan over your home WiFi rather than connecting to a local cell tower.

It is NOT the same as using WhatsApp or Messenger calling.

The lack of mobile signal is nothing to do with Sky.

You have a problem with your wifi in the home from what you say.  Poor router, badly placed router, thick walls etc.

Your phones being wifi enabled is not the same as the phones being enabled for wifi calling.  Sky support it as does the iPhone 7
