Its the extra 2nd and 3rd year extended warranty that is usually voided by using non "main dealers" to service your car as it is normally provided free by the original selling dealer as long as the car is serviced by a main dealer. IIRC EU regs makes it illegal for manufacturers to refuse to pay for warranty work during the first manufacturers waranty period if the car has been serviced outside the main dealer network as long as original parts have been used and its serviced to the manufacturers specifications. However doing so then makes the car inedgible for the free 2nd and 3rd year extended warranty,Join the Sarcasm Appreciation Society.

Following changes to Block Exemption rulings, you do not need to have your car serviced at a main dealer to maintain the warranty - however, the parts must used must match 'original quality'.
Be carefull - there are a lot of very poor quality car parts out there. If you do not go to a main dealer, ensure that the garaqe you use uses quality, branded parts.
Many main dealers offer a reduced labour rate for older vehicles and can also offer a 'second string' line of parts that carry the same warranty as OE (Original Equipment) parts.
One little thought about fact is the quality of oil used by garages. Many modern cars have very specific requirements for oils - if you put catrol GTX in them, it can ruin cat convertors and massively shorten the life of your engine, so again, make sure the correct spec is going in your car (it wont be cheap!!!).
For me, if you can get the main dealer to do the work at a reduced rate (negotiate with them!), they are still best placed to do the work on your car as they have the correct parts, training, technical backup etc.

To be honest if you want to save money, don't buy a new car, worrying about £50 extra for a service is tiny is comparison to losing a few thousand a year for the first couple of years. Buy at three years old, get a private warranty insist on full MOT and 12 months tax.Live slow, Die old lol0
